BBC Launches WhatsApp ‘Ebola Lifeline’ Service in West Africa

BBC-NewsThe BBC has launched a WhatsApp service in West Africa to spread information, news alerts, and provide what they’re calling a “lifeline” to people in the affected areas. It will be available in both English and French; you can access it at  +44 7702 348651.

WhatsApp is the most popular messaging service in Africa and while it’s the first time the BBC has used it to spread information on health news, it has used WhatsApp and other messaging services like BBM and WeChat in the past for breaking news alerts. In a statement, Director of the World Service Group Peter Horrocks said:

This outbreak of Ebola shows no signs of abating. Myths and misinformation about Ebola are still widespread – and life-threatening. The BBC is trusted by millions of people in the affected countries, so we are stepping up our efforts to reach people with timely information, whether they’re listening to the radio, watching TV or using chat apps. We’re committed to playing our part and will continue looking at new ways to reach audiences, for example by developing programmes in local vernacular languages.

BBC Pop Up Launches in Colorado

bbcpopupPop-up food trucks, fashion boutiques, flea markets. Now, there are pop-up newsrooms, too, thanks to BBC Pop Up. A truly mobile newsroom, BBC has sent a small crew of video journalists to travel around North America for six months to embed themselves in a place and dig around for good stories.

For their first stop, the team is in Boulder, Colo., where they’ve been since last week. Here’s their first dispatch on how residents have dealt with the aftermath of the Jamestown floods:

Mathew Danzico, of the Pop Up team and BBC’s Video Innovation Lab, says the project is about “empowering residents to tell their stories.” The team is posted together in a house and working out of a co-working space in the area. Since arriving, they’ve held town hall meetings to announce their presence, meet with residents and pick their brains about what to cover. They’re also holding journalism workshops at local universities.   Read more

BBC.com Launches New Business Sections

BBC.com announced today that it’s launching two new verticals –BBC Capital and BBC Entrepreneurship. Jennifer Merritt, formerly of the WSJ and Business Week, will head up the Capital section, which features sections on Leadership, Personal Finance, and Workplace with featured columnists Liz Garone, Kelsey Hubbard, and Ron Alsop, respectively.

The Entrepreneurship section will, according to the release this morning:

provide small business owners and investors with engaging insights from people who have made their businesses successful. The site will feature weekly insights from award-winning BBC business correspondent, Peter Day, and a series called Thinking Business that will examine the latest ideas – for example, why are there so many startup competitions?

The new verticals are part of a move to charge “into business coverage with full force,” according to Nick Ascheim, SVP of Consumer Digital at BBC.com.

How Journalists Can Celebrate Women’s Day

Recently there has been much discussion of the underrepresentation of women in the media industry. It can be easy to lament about the situation, difficult to understand the reasons, and even more difficult to actually do something about it. How can an industry work towards gender equality, when many other industries and the culture at large reflect these biases?

Enter UNESCO’s Women Make the News initiative. This advocacy initiative, starting with International Women’s Day and lasting through April 30, aims to promote gender equality in the media across the world. According to a UNESCO report, women make up 36 percent of reporting jobs and 27 percent of management jobs in media companies worldwide. This year’s initiative focuses on the difficulties for rural women to access media, and gives those in the industry suggestions of how to participate. Read more

BBC Redesign Attempts To Make Website More “Swipable”

With the rise of new media platforms like tablets and smart phones, the ways in which we interact with content have shifted dramatically. In a nod to the ever-growing amount of readers using tablet and mobile devices to read the news, the BBC launched a beta site redesign today that accounts for “swipability,” the finger gesture most popular for navigation on smart phones and tablets. “The beta provides a first glimpse of core design principles that will underpin the reshaped BBC Online,” said the BBC in a press release today, “which take into account changing user behaviours including the preference for ‘swiping’ through content – increasingly intuitive given the rise of touch-screen smart phones and tablets.”
