Anthony De Rosa Joins Circa as Editor in Chief

You remember Circa, don’t you? The mobile app that touts itself as the “best way to read news on your phone” is still growing, with its latest addition to the staff being Reuters’ social media editor Anthony De Rosa.

In a release, De Rosa said:

“There’s a huge opportunity to present news in a way that’s made for mobile. Nobody is thinking about this more than Circa and I’m thrilled to help move that mission forward.”

Video: Ben Huh Discusses His Journalist Past, The Future of Journalism

I have to admit, before watching this Shama.TV video interview with Cheezburger Network CEO Ben Huh, I had no idea Huh majored in journalism in college (at Northwestern, no less). He obviously didn’t pursue a news media career and went to work on the web, which, you know, seems to be working out all right for him. In a mash-up of his talents, he’s also co-founder of the relatively new Circa app, designed to improve the way readers consume news on mobile devices.

He discusses the app and his take on the future of journalism and the importance of local, unique stories in the survival of journalism. It’s a short but insightful clip. Here’s a taste:

“I think journalism is going to go through a very innovative process. How we think about journalism today is really about location and format… and also by geo-location… For journalism to be really a influential force in new media ti has to understand mobile, it has to understand tablets, it has to understand new viewing habits and how they all work together.”

Roughly a week and a half ago, a new mobile app launched for iOS devices that may have a big impact in news circles – not just in terms of usage, but in how it may affect the way journalists and news organizations think about presenting the news for a mobile audience.

The app, known as Circa, is branded as “the best way to read the news on your phone.” As opposed to functioning like an RSS feed by incorporating entire stories for users or as an app providing short summaries to recap major news stories, Circa offers a snack-able alternative for story consumption.
