What You Need To Know About Facebook’s New Metrics

Facebook has been on a roll lately, unleashing several noteworthy changes to its platform that impact everything from profile layout to page management. This week, they announced some dramatic updates to Facebook Insights that will help page managers get a better understanding of how well their Pages are performing.

The most notable new metric is “People Talking About” which, according to Mashable, will “measure user-initiated activity related to a Page, including posting to a Page’s Wall, “liking,” commenting, sharing a Page post or content on the Page, answering a Question posed to fans, mentioning a Page, “liking” or sharing a deal or checking in at your Place.” This is especially important for the management of a news organization’s Facebook page, as it will help page managers better understand which content is resonating across Facebook as a whole.

It’s been said that social media ultimately boils down to a numbers game.

Getting the most Likes on a Facebook page, or lots of re-tweets being seen as an indicator of success or failure

I would argue that for personal use, numbers have little to do with getting the most out of the platforms. You get what you put in. Your social media profiles ultimately become whatever you want them to be.

However for business, numbers mean everything. Not in the sense of trying to get Likes or Followers in hoards. Rather, what I’m talking about are metrics of success.

Social media analytics and insights are critcally important to understanding how a social media campaign is resonating with customers and users.
