Three Things I’m Thankful For This Year, Web Journalism Edition

Last year, the contributors to 10,000 Words wrote a short post about what we were thankful for. My contribution? Blackbird Pie, Twitter’s tool that allows you to embed tweets.

This year, I thought I would go a little bit more in depth, by sharing with you three relatively different things in Web journalism that I am thankful for this Thanksgiving holiday. And by the way, it goes without saying that all of us owe you—or readers—a huge debt of gratitude. You keep coming back for more, and keep offering us very nice compliments!

So, without further ado, here are (among) the three things I’m thankful in Web journalism this year. continued…

Apple Newsstand Already Increasing Sales For Digital Publishers

Apple’s newest operating system, iOS 5, was released just last week, but digital publishers are already seeing a dramatic uptick in sales. This increase is thanks to Apple Newsstand, a new feature similar to iBooks that aggregates magazine and newspaper app subscriptions into one easy to use destination. As Apple writes, “New purchases go directly to your Newsstand folder. Then, as new issues become available, Newsstand automatically updates them in the background — complete with the latest covers. It’s kind of like having the paper delivered to your front door. Only better.”

iOS 5 — And Newsstand — Go Live Next Week

Buried in the headlines following this week’s untimely passing of Steve Jobs is the news that Apple will release iOS 5 next Wednesday, Oct. 12. It’s an exciting (and free) upgrade for users of the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. The Notification Center, iMessage, Reminders and the integration of Twitter are all exciting new features.

Most exciting for journalists, however, is Newsstand.

Newsstand manages your subscriptions to iOS versions of newspapers and magazines. It will alert you when there’s a new issue available. It even displays the covers on a rack — like a real newsstand. It’s like a dynamic version of iBooks. continued…
