Can MediaWire Bridge the Cross-Platform Gap?

Developing a comprehensive digital experience for a publication is no small task. While very few outlets have the financing and manpower to produce a custom app, the low-cost appeal of micropublishing could leave organizations still wanting more — especially when it forces you to choose between platforms rather than catering to all of them.

Cross-platform experiences are the goal of MediaWire, a new startup that enables publishers to create and distribute their publications directly through smartphone stores. Unlike some micropublishing apps, MediaWire charges a flat fee per upload and leaves the revenue from sales alone.

The tool already publishes apps to the Apple App store and Google Play, with BlackBerry App World and Windows Store to follow. MediaWire is one of the only companies that supports all of these devices from a single source, meaning that it’s a good candidate to use for digital publishing if the goal is to be truly cross platform across all mediums. MediaWire also allows for users to share publications across major social media networks, including Facebook and Twitter, for no extra cost. continued…

Quick! Pick Up These Helpful iPhone Apps Still On Sale

As a journalist, the only thing better than a piece of new equipment is a piece of new equipment for a rock-bottom price. Everyone is doing more with less these days, so it’s more important than ever to take advantage of sales that will boost your toolset without breaking the bank.

Luckily, those doldrum days between Christmas and New Years have become a boon for people who are looking for a good deal, and you can see that phenomenon no better than in the Apple app store. Whether you’re taking advantage of a new device or interested in updating your apps, these four products will become your go-to for on-the-fly reporting and task management — and might make you a better reporter in the process. continued…

Although the book is called a “mobile” reporting guide, it’s actually device-specific, focusing specifically on the iPhone. You can download the book to read as a PDF, or download it from the Apple iBook store.

The book reviews various apps, gear and recommendations for a mobile “kit” that covers “everything you would need to cover breaking news or conduct a two person interview.”

Students Casey Capachi, Matt Sarnecki and Evan Wagstaff are credited for their contributions.

Publishing Your News Content to Google Currents

Here on 10,000 Words, we’ve shown you a few tips on how to define your newsroom’s mobile presence, as well as some other helpful tips for reaching news junkies on the second screen. A recent report from the Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism showed that 53% of tablet owners are daily news consumers. And while the iPad still dominates the tablet marketplace, Android tablets are popping up all over the place this holiday season from manufacturers like HTC, Motorola, and Samsung. Even Amazon has recently entered the fray with their own Android-powered tablet device: the Kindle Fire. Google continues their rapid-fire push into the tablet arena with their latest application: Google Currents.

Google Currents allows users to browse their favorite magazines, newspapers and websites in an attractive and elegant format. Google has joined with over 150 publishing partners to offer content, including Saveur, Popular Science, Fast Company, ProPublica, Forbes, The Atlantic, and more. Consumers have over 180 editions of formatted content to choose from once they download the app to their Android or iOS device. But the best thing about Google Currents is that anyone can create their editions for the app. Google has created an intuitive self-service platform that gives you the ability to customize, brand and style your Google Currents edition to match your organization or website. (Note: the Google Currents app is only available in the US, but users worldwide can create their own editions.)

Flipboard Launches Long-Anticipated iPhone App

Flipboard, the social magazine iPad app that organizes sectionalized content (like “News,” “Technology” and “Food”) and social network updates into a sleek, unified interface, launched its highly anticipated iPhone app today. With the roll out, Flipboard announced a new feature called Cover Stories, which, according to CNET, “learns from a reader’s interactions with the content and helps them quickly catch up with some of the most interesting news, updates, and photos being shared at that moment.”

The new app easily translates the intuitive gestures that make the iPad version so enjoyable into those friendlier for the small screen: instead of horizontally swiping to turn pages, the iPhone version allows vertical swiping, which makes it much easier to navigate on the smaller device.

iOS 5 — And Newsstand — Go Live Next Week

Buried in the headlines following this week’s untimely passing of Steve Jobs is the news that Apple will release iOS 5 next Wednesday, Oct. 12. It’s an exciting (and free) upgrade for users of the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. The Notification Center, iMessage, Reminders and the integration of Twitter are all exciting new features.

Most exciting for journalists, however, is Newsstand.

Newsstand manages your subscriptions to iOS versions of newspapers and magazines. It will alert you when there’s a new issue available. It even displays the covers on a rack — like a real newsstand. It’s like a dynamic version of iBooks. continued…

Tool of the Day: Mobile Media Toolkit

The mobile phone has become an indispensable tool in every journalist’s arsenal. Whether you are on an iPhone, a Blackberry, an Android handset, or any other type of mobile phone, the skills that a journalist can use to capture and share the news are the same. But with all the apps and resources available, where does a journalist begin? What if you’re looking for ways to engage a mobile audience? Or what if you are a seasoned journalist that needs a primer on reaching out to the mobile market? Now there’s a one-stop resource for journalists of all types — the Mobile Media Toolkit.

The Mobile Media Toolkit is a project of MobileActive.org, a global network of people using mobile technology for social impact. The website is comprised of a large number of case studies, as well as brief reviews on tools and apps. Content is divided into five main sections: Create, Share, Deliver, Engage, and Secure. Each section gives an overview of the topic, a descriptive how-to guide along with several articles, and the limitations of each method. All sorts of methods are covered, including creating audio or video, tapping into social media, and gives tips on how to enable others to create mobile content to share. The Secure section of the Mobile Media Toolkit also features another project from MobileActive.org called SaferMobile, which helps activists, human rights defenders, and journalists assess the mobile communications risks that they are facing, and then use appropriate mitigation techniques to increase their ability to organize, report, and work more safely.

The Mobile Media Toolkit is also available in Spanish and Arabic. The project is funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and run by journalist Melissa Ulbricht.

How To Get The Most Out Of Your iPhone As A Reporting Tool

Increasingly, iPhones are becoming a credible, convenient and reliable tool for journalists –both amateur and professional– to use in the field. Mobile reporting was even the topic of a UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism course taught by Jeremy Rue to help journalists learn how to get the most out of reporting from a mobile device.

Will Sullivan at the Reynolds Journalism Institute at the University of Missouri also put together an incredible guide which outlines the various hardware and applications every journalist should have — definitely a recommended read. (Update 4/16: this post originally stated, incorrectly, that Will Sullivan’s guide was a project out of UC Berkeley. In fact, the funding, support and resources for his mobile tools guide came from RJI where he is a 2010-2011 fellow studying mobile and tablet development).

But that’s not what I’m writing about here. Aside from the must-have apps, these are some practical tips and tricks — the dirty, simple basics for day-to-day reporting — that can help you get the most out of your iPhone as a reporting tool. continued…

Five Alternative Devices To Replace The Now-Dead Flip Cam

Journalists who have relied on the handy and easy Flip cam for their multimedia reporting needs may find themselves out of luck this week. Cisco, the technology company that bought Flip two years ago, announced they will be shutting down Flip as part of a new restructuring of its consumer business.

In journalism circles, the Flip camera has been praised as “the future of journalism video” for its compact design and ease of use. As Nieman Reports once wrote, “The Flip video camera’s simple, one-red-button design makes it perfect for capturing quick video pieces for multimedia reporting.” There have always been the downsides, of course, like shaky video quality and less-than-desirable audio quality, but the overall convenience of the device has made it a frontrunner in spot reporting tools.

Now that the Flip is gone, fret not. There are a handful of other tools that can get the job done. continued…
