Save the Date: Social Media Summit in London

socialmediasummitNext Friday, BBC Academy’s College of Journalism, the New York Times, and the Knight Foundation are holding the Social Media Summit 2014 in London. If you are already across the pond or just loaded enough to jet set, it’s possible that you’re still out of luck. Tickets were going quickly.

But you can still follow along using, of course, social media. I’d tune into Twitter around 2pm (UK time) to follow Vivian Schiller’s keynote speech. Earlier in the day, Andy Carvin of First Look Media joins a panel of international journalists to talk about covering world news and using social media to do it better. Knight Foundation Helps Fund 17 Innovative Media Projects

KnightLOGOMore media innovation is coming, in part thanks to the Knight Foundation (and of course, the great minds they help fund). The foundation recognizes that money and time are often obstacles to people who have big ideas about making media and journalism processes better, so they have chosen 17 inventive projects to fund through their Prototype Fund program.

The $35,000 grant allows media creatives to fully develop their ideas over a six-month period and then demo the final product before their peers and Knight folks at the end of the ride. After glancing at the list, these projects stood out as significantly useful tools for journalists and digitally-native news organizations. Read more

Arizona State Journalism Students Collaborate With Citizen Journalists

8.24-CronkiteThanks to a $250,000 grant from the Knight Foundation, students at Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism now help comprise a new American Public Media Public Insight Network (PIN) hub.

What does that mean, you ask? Basically, ASU J-schoolers now have the opportunity to work alongside faculty members and media professionals as they correspond with PIN sources. The newest home of PIN, a thriving digital platform where more than 215,000 citizen experts have volunteered their expertise and angles to reporters across the country, will live in the Cronkite School’s downtown Phoenix campus building.

Organizations like the Seattle Times, NPR, the Washington Post, Columbia J-School and dozens of others utilize the PIN platform to find trustworthy information for news coverage quickly and to incorporate diverse views into their reporting. Surely, ASU’s implementation of PIN fosters a “teaching hospital” environment. Plus, usage of the PIN platform in Arizona benefits American Public Media, as it works to sustain the initiative in the future.

Said David Kansas, American Public Media’s senior vice president and chief operating officer, in a press release: “It will provide an important service to the industry and a rich educational experience and career pipeline for students while helping to position PIN and the networked journalism it fosters for long-term sustainability.”

Ready to Change the Web? Applications for Knight News Challenge Open Today

knight featured imageDo you have a good idea about how to protect the open web? Strengthen it? Improve on it? The Knight Foundation, in collaboration with the Ford Foundation and Mozilla, is offering $2.75 million in prizes to projects that speak to “strengthening the internet for free expression and innovation” and invites applicants to focus on “journalism, policy, research, and education.”

The contest is open to everyone: non-profits, for-profits, individuals, students. You can find out more here. There’s a virtual meeting on March 4 at 1p.m. ET, which you can access here. There’s also the ‘Open IDEO-powered newschallenge.org platform that “facilitates conversations across projects and allows applicants to refine their ideas based on user comments and suggestions,” according to the press release. In mid-April, semi-finalists will be chosen to move forward in the contest.

Don’t procrastinate, though. The deadline is March 18 at 5 p.m. ET. Winners will be announced in June at the MIT-Knight Civic Media Conference.

If you want to get an idea of how to frame and scale your project, the last round of News Challenge winners were announced in January for projects focused on health.
