Culture and Political News — With a Hardcover

hrdcvrDanyel Wilson and Elliot Smith think, like most of us, that journalism as it’s practiced today needs fixing. So they’re focusing on the “soul” of our beloved craft and launching a magazine, in the form of a book. Yes, you read that correctly.

If you want to see it to believe it, you can donate now to their Kickstarter fund for the project, HRDCVR, which is open until June 5th.

Smith and Wilson are both journalists themselves, working at places like XXL and Vibe, respectively. So the magazine has a focus on culture and politics, with an emphasis on music, tech, and elections. Wilson “refined” the project while studying at Stanford University on a Knight Foundation fellowship. The magazine comes with an ethos of ditching the niche and the mainstream — something many publications are flocking towards — and being “multistream.”

Smith says in their release for the Kickstarter campaign that HRDCVR plans to:

make content from the revolutionary stance of everyone being equally interesting. We embrace the politics and cultures and passions of actual and projected populations in the United States. Our creative teams reflect and take inspiration from the humans and the humanity behind the new demographics

Woman’s Day Pays up to $2 a Word for Straightforward, Feel-good Writing

womans-day-january-2014Woman’s Day knows that its readers (women ages 30 to 90) are incredibly busy, and they crave easily digestible advice on everything from cooking and home decor to health and money matters.

The editors are looking for writers with a straightforward tone and the ability to do their research before sending a pitch — reading back issues of the mag (at least the past 12 months) is invaluable. Knowing which section to pitch and what type of reader to cater to is also key:

A writer’s best entryway onto the pages of the mag is a front-of-book section called “Embrace the Day,” focused on community and giving to others. It’s a special place in the hearts of Woman’s Day readers. “We did a story six months ago about a woman who makes cakes for children with cancer. Another editor and I discussed it and she said, ‘do you want to put a call-out for people to give?’ The woman didn’t have a 501(c)(3), so I didn’t feel comfortable soliciting donations on her behalf. But it didn’t matter,” [executive editor Annemarie Conte] shares. “Our readers found her. One even wrote in and taped a $100 bill to her letter. Our readers are incredibly giving and want to find deserving places to give.”

Issuu Releases New Update, Becomes Community Magazine Library

One of the most popular platforms for digital magazine distribution, Issuu, is finally getting a new look. With 70 million unique visitors each month via 11.5 million publications already in tow, the website is now transitioning from a place for magazines to get their name out to a place where readers can go to discover new material.

And with a new update that went live today, readers will be exposed to a lot more of what the platform has to offer.

How You Can Get Involved With Longshot Magazine

The dynamic trio and their team of volunteer editors, sketch artists, photographers, writers, reporters and poets are at it again — the 48-hour, user-generated Longshot Magazine will be produced July 29 through July 31 in New York City.

Longshot Magazine — co-founded by Gizmodo’s Mat Honan, The Atlantic’s Alexis Madrigal, and GOOD Magazine’s Sarah Rich — is a creative magazine produced entirely in 48 hours with stories and art submitted by people from around the world on the web. The magazine editors will announce the theme of the magazine on Friday, July 29 at noon, and users can start submitting their work. By noon on Sunday, the magazine will be completed and sent to print, and a digital, mobile-compatible version will be available online.
