No More Invites to Join Pinterest

Pinterest has dropped its invite-only policy, announcing open registration for prospective pinners. Now, besides being able to sign up with a Facebook or Twitter account, users can also sign up with just an email address.

Based on the social network’s huge growth, you wouldn’t think that it was an invite-only site. Pinterest grew 4,377 percent from May 2011 to May 2012, becoming the fastest growing social network early this year, according to a ComScore report.

Now that the company has developed the capacity to handle open registration, it’ll probably continue to see its numbers grow. Add that to potential international users—the site received $100 million recently to fund its international expansion.

Do you think Pinterest will see Facebook-like popularity abroad?

Study: iPad Owners Consume More News

A recent survey from the Reynolds Journalism Institute found that iPad users were more likely to consume news compared to those without iPads. Not only were iPad users across age groups more likely to go to news organizations for information—they also spent more time reading the news compared to people who do not own iPads. Eighty-four percent of iPad users like to keep up with the news on their devices, compared to 63 percent of all mobile device owners.

These numbers may not be all that surprising, but the study also found that two-thirds of those in the 18 to 34 age group spent 5 hours a week consuming content from news organizations. This rose to 7.3 hours a week for those with an iPad in this age group. Interestingly, media consumers over 55 spent less time consuming news on their devices—probably because two-thirds of them have subscriptions to news in print form. This contrasts with the younger age group, where only a quarter of them have print subscriptions. continued…

You Tell Us: What Are Social Media’s Limitations In Your Newsroom?

Much is made about how social media has changed newsrooms, and I’m one of those people who talks a lot about it.

But for all of that talk, there comes a point where you need to decide what action to take, if any.

Newsrooms today are bombarded with lists of best practice, how-to’s and draconian Do This Or You Will Perish blogs and articles.

Do you go with the herd, or do you hold your own and keep moving forward the best way you know how?

I’d really like to hear from some of our readers who are “on the ground” as a part of, or observing, their newsroom’s transformation and/or adoption of social media and online communities.

Not everyone is going to have an easy time of it, but there is certainly opportunity to learn from each other’s experiences.

If you have something to share, please chime in with a comment below about the horror stories, or the tales of greatness at the news organization you work at.

Is Social Media a Fad? Students Are Beginning to Wonder

This week I’ve been speaking to classes at Central Michigan University about social media and how it relates to mass communications and journalism.

At the end of my lecture, I took questions from the audience.

A recurring theme among the students has been a level of skepticism that social media is here to stay, or if it will fade out and be replaced with something else.

Their skepticism surprised me because they were the last group of people I expected to hear something like that from.

Students asked if there’s something new on the horizon that will off-set Facebook, Twitter and so on.

continued…

Why Some News Orgs. Need a Narrow Social Media Strategy

With there being so many different social media channels and applications available, it can be easy to get swept under by it all.

Instead of having a focused approach, you end up signing up for 10 different sites. You’re not able to give each of them the time they require to be effective, so the entire plan falls apart.
