Tonight (Friday 7-20-12) Cooper opened his newscast from Aurora, Colorado with the remark 'We will only use the gunman's name a few times, because we want to focus on the victims, not the shooter.' Oh, Jesus. |

Reflecting the view of many Many say the attacker fires to draw attention to himself. And thus we glorify the violent, the criminal - when we should give honor to the peace-loving, and perhaps even those who acted heroically to save lives. I think the thinking of many people on these things changed with Columbine High School in 1999. The names of Cassie Bernall and Rachel Scott have become associated with that day, almost as much as Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold. |

GIVE ME A BREAK! CNN's job is to report the facts about the story, not to make moral decisions about how to refer to the suspect. It's just a self-serving ploy to make Cooper come across like an Everyman who feels the victims' pain. You would never have heard Walter Cronkite refusing to say a suspect's name. |

All the facts and pertinent information can still be reported using the word "shooter", rather than his name. Not that big a deal. |

Dear Anderson Cooper Dear Anderson Cooper.... Because I do not want political correctness to dumb-down my children....and because it's journalistically correct...I always want everyone to know and never forget that it was: JOHN WILKES BOOTH-who assasinated President Lincoln. LEE HARVEY OSWALD-who assasinated President Kennedy. JOHN HINKLEY- who shot President Reagan. MEHMET ALI AGCA-who shot Pope John Paul II. SIRHAN SIRHAN- who assasinated Robert Kennedy. MARK DAVID CHAPMAN--who shot & killed John Lennon. We're not making killers famous--we're always making sure they remain infamous. Never leave out the names of asshole killers. |
