Test of anthrax vaccine in children gets tentative OK
Here's a link to a Reuters article:
A presidential ethics panel has opened the door to testing an anthrax vaccine on children as young as infants, bringing an angry response from critics who say the children would be guinea pigs in a study that would never help them and might harm them.
The report, however, released on Tuesday by the Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues, said researchers would have to overcome numerous hurdles before launching an anthrax-vaccine trial in children. It now goes to Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius, who will decide whether to take the steps the commission recommended.
The one anthrax vaccine approved in the United States, called BioThrax, is made by Emergent BioSolutions Inc of Rockville, Maryland. The company reported $215.9 million in sales of BioThrax, its only licensed product, in 2012.
Is there a rampant anthrax pandemic that we haven't been told about?
Why are they pushing this test on children/infants? Children/infants are almost never included in medical trials, ever. EVER. There has to be extreme circumstances to get approval to use them as subjects.
AND IN OTHER SMALLPOX NEWS ...
NYT reported that the government has also ordered $463 million of a non-FDA-approved, never-tested-on-humans smallpox antidote, enough to treat ONLY 2 million. This is interesting because:
the U.S. and Russia are the only countries that currently admit to having stockpiles of the smallpox virus
the U.S. gov't has 300 million doses of smallpox vaccine on hand (vs. 2 million doses of this new drug)
Smallpox was erradicated in 1980
If there is a threat/perceived threat, why doesn't the CDC reinstate the vaccine, which was halted in 1972?
Here's a link to the times article:
Are these realistic threats?
Or are they contracts to line the pockets of gov't cronies?

*** Is there a rampant anthrax pandemic that we haven't been told about? ***
Oh, probably. It's best to stay indoors and plug all the gaps around windows and doors just in case. Don't take anything new into your home.
You know the drill. (Bioterrorists hope you don't.)

And where is the MSM??
Are they covering up this information??
Oh..wait, anthrax can actually still be a big threat...and the "Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues", and the HHS both have their own websites...and Reuters and the NYT ARE the MSM...

That comment was sarcastic. Anthrax isn't a threat, so why are they creating a vaccine? Would YOU line up to take it? I certainly won't no matter how loud the gov't starts ringing that bell.
Where in my post did I accuse the MSM of not covering these topics?
Although to tell you the truth, I found both stories on my alternative new sites, front and center. I had to use the SEARCH function to find them on reuters and NYT, in order to use sites that people here might actually accept as "news" sites. The coverage by the alt news sites was more in depth and, frankly, a hell of a lot better.
Oh, and more news on the H1N1 vaccine: A recent study shows that the H1N1 flu vaccine can cause Guillain-Barre Syndrome (this actually happened to a friend of mine, who was extremely lucky as it was a mild case). Tack that on to the extremely high rates of life-disabling narcolepsy found in the pediatric population that was vaccinated in Europe (14x higher than average). Lovely.
But I thank you for your contributions to the discussion of the government's choices as far as funding drugs that may/may not be safe and/or necessary for the general public.

Anthrax is NOT a threat?
Where'd you get that?
My wife is heavily involved in the public health preparations to prevent an anthrax outbreak in the U.S. She's involved in prepositioning antibiotics ahead of an attack. She's been saying for years how woefully unprepared we are for an actual, coordinated strike.
Do you NOT remember the half-assed attack in the aftermath of 9/11 where a crank killed people and basically shut down the federal government with just a few anthrax-laced letters?
Half my office was on Cipro for a month!
If you've ever taken it, you'd line up for a new vaccine.
In addition, as far back as 2004, it's been reported that North Korea likely has it's own stockpile of smallpox -- the main reason the U.S. and Russia have been hesitant to destroy their samples.

So we should spend money preparing for every possible threat ion the face of the earth?
Puh-lease. We don't even have a workable healthcare system, but let's pour money into a drug that has basically zero chance of ever being used.
Could you imagine what $215 million could do if it was slated for diabetes care?
But let's feed the war machine. I was waiting for someone else to point out that these are NOT public health measures.
They are war-related. Not health-related.
Since I could get killed by gunfire, will the gov't also be handing out kevlar to everyone? Or mailing me a gas mask? Or, gasp, mailing me a rifle so I can defend myself? Or will these also be reserved for just 1% of the population? If the 2004 threat was so real and eminent, why wasn't this addressed then? They had to wait almost a decade? Why wasn't it a priority then?
Can you also explain away the smallpox vaccine/drug issue? Does that make sense to your wife -- care for the disease, but not prophylactic vaccination? (reasoning purposes only)
And no. I would never line up for a vaccine. Ever. If you really understood the science behind it or the elements contained in the vials, you wouldn't either.
Google SV40, Dr. Hillenman, Merck, and see if you like what you find. Got cancer? (youtube video is named "Vaccine pioneer admits adding cancer-causing virus to Vaccine"). The video is old, he died in 2005. Read the commentary also.
You know how polio was erradicated? They changed the classification of the disease. It was MUCH harder to be diagnosed with polio after the vaccine was used. The criteria were more specific (one criteria reduced the time of presence of symptoms: from 24 hr of symptoms, to 60 DAYS of symptoms). Again, another fact, google it yourself. Polio reclassification of disease.
But you won't. Too stubborn. I get it.

Don't worry, guys -- BT's here to smack people around for working in news.
She digs anthrax and smallpox, let her figure it out. She doesn't see Reuters and the NYT as mainstream, that's just her.
One person in a great, wide universe.

we prepare for LIKELY threats.
That's why we build flood walls, that's why we have flu shots every fall, that's why we put up tornado sirens in towns that have not seen a twister in 30 years.
These things aren't needed every day -- but on the one day they ARE needed, they save lots of lives.
Having a stockpile of anthrax and smallpox vaccines and treatments can save millions of lives if they are ever needed.
You keep a stockpile on hand in case disaster strikes.
You replenish that stockpile as it nears it's expiration date.
When a better, cheaper or safer vaccine or treatment comes along, you replace the old stuff with the new stuff.
You were obviously never a Boy Scout -- or you'd have learned something from the motto.

beenthere? Change it to 'outthere'.
"Anthrax isn't a threat, so why are they creating a vaccine? Would YOU line up to take it? I certainly won't". Well goodie for you. Just stay away from me on the subway. If you hold onto the 'Not on my kid you dont' philosophy, ala Jenny McCarthy comes to mind, oh well. (On the other hand, if you ARE Jenny McCarthy...HI. My name's Michael. Can I gawk? Send pics??)
I've always been a big 'House' fan...does anyone remember the episode when he smacked down the anti-shot Mom?
Dr. Gregory House: [examining a baby whose mother isn't vaccinating him because she feels it's a scam; House takes the child's stuffed frog] All natural, no dyes. That's a good business - all-natural children's toys. Those toy companies, they don't arbitrarily mark up their frogs. They don't lie about how much they spend on research and development. And the worst that a toy company can be accused of is making a really boring frog. Gribbit, gribbit, gribbit. You know another really good business? Teeny tiny baby coffins. You can get them in frog green, fire engine red. Really. The antibodies in yummy mummy only protect the kid for six months, which is why these companies think they can gouge you. They think that you'll spend whatever they ask to keep your kid alive. Want to change things? Prove them wrong. A few hundred parents like you decide they'd rather let their kid die then cough up 40 bucks for a vaccination, believe me, prices will drop *really* fast. Gribbit, gribbit, gribbit, gribbit, gribbit." (fox)
beenthere? You're 'out there'. "You know how polio was erradicated? They changed the classification of the disease"
Oh, so THAT'S how they did it. Wiped out a crippling disease with paperwork. Will someone PLEASE give this un-named bureaucrat a laptop so he can wipe out cholera and aids.
"And no. I would never line up for a vaccine. Ever." Direct quote. Kind of says it all, doesn't it?

"The 2001 anthrax attacks in the United States, also known as Amerithrax from its Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) case name, occurred over the course of several weeks beginning on Tuesday, September 18, 2001, one week after the September 11 attacks. Letters containing anthrax spores were mailed to several news media offices and two Democratic U.S. Senators, killing five people and infecting 17 others."
"In the wake of the September 11 terror attacks, US citizens were intentionally exposed to anthrax.
"Men and women from Florida, Virginia, Washington DC, New Jersey, New York and Connecticut contracted cutaneous and inhalational anthrax.
"There were 7 confirmed and 4 “probable” cases of cutaneous anthrax; all survived. 11 people contracted inhalational anthrax. Of those 11 people, 5 died.
" Congress and major media outlets were virtually shut down after being targeted with anthrax.
"... Delivering weaponized anthrax was as simple as putting it in an envelope and dropping it in a mailbox.
beenthere has so much contempt for news people, what do you expect?
