Are writers' guilds and associations worth it?

I'm specifically asking from a travel writing perspective: Are groups like the American Society of Journalists and Authors, the International Travel Writers & Photographers Alliance, and the American Writers & Artists Inc. worth joining?
Also, what about Media Kitty and other sites that supposedly have press trip information and other sources?
Thanks for your thoughts,

you have to apply to ASJA and get accepted.

It depends what you want to get from it and what you're willing to offer. I've been a member of ASJA for years and find it extremely helpful in many ways. I'm not a travel writer, but many of our members are.
I find it useful for confidential recon on editors and markets, (who to avoid, who's paying well), resolving some challenges quickly by accessing others' wisdom, even references for fellowships and referrals to editors. But if you're not someone who's reliable and generous as well, no organization will offer that much.

Other groups offer what caitlin mentioned. Whether any of them are "worth joining" depends on what you, as an individual, expect to get out of and put into them.

Grateful Deadline is correct. I'm with the Connecticut Press Club because the programs are affordable and I've made lots of great contacts and increased the number of assignments I get. That's my goal.
