Professional/Personal Overview
I've been writing about technology and its discontents for 200 years -- wait, I guess it's really 20 years, it just feels like 200. I write two monthly columns (PC World and US Airways magazine) and a pseudonymous blog for another tech pub, plus regular assignments for the likes of Wired News and, strangely, Family Circle magazine. Snarky humor is a specialty, so is investigative reporting.

mediabistro.com Questions

What do you wish you'd learned sooner?
Everything.

Describe your dream assignment
#1 Interview Angelina Jolie in a hot tub. #2. A spy in the works at Pixar, ILM, or some other cutting edge creative company.... which also involves interviewing Angelina Jolie in a hot tub.

What book is on your nightstand right now?
Bangkok 8. Terrific story about a Buddhist detective on a mission of revenge.

What's the hardest work project you've ever tackled?
Editor in chief of a now thankfully defunct multimedia magazine. I aged 10 years in one year.

What's the best job you've ever had?
Behind the counter at Baskin Robbins, age 15. I could eat my weight in ice cream and not gain an ounce of fat.

What's your idea of a perfect Saturday night?
Now this is boring: home with the wife and kids, eating popcorn and watching movies. (Am I domesticated or what?) Or... the answer to my dream assignment, above. You pick.

What's your idea of a perfect Monday morning?
Tuesday afternoon.

In ten years, I want to be:
Taller and thinner. Ain't gonna happen, though.

Work Samples

(PCworld.com, 12/16/2007)
One of the many 'list' stories PCW has asked me to compose, this one in particular really ticked people off. Half of the readers believe I am in bed with Apple; the other half are certain I am in league with Microsoft. I'd call that a success.
(US Airways magazine, 10/1/2007)
Probably my favorite ongoing gig is writing the Our Digital Life column for US Airways magazine, even if my picture does suck. Here's one I wrote about Second Life and virtual worlds in general.
(Popular Science, 10/1/2006)
Mostly a profile of Carnegie Mellon University's CyLab computer security thinktank. This one was hell to write (ask me why, be happy to tell you) and the final product is just OK, but the graphics are terrific. (You probably can't tell from the website.)
