Flu stats, deaths: More lies

Latest death stats available from the CDC re flu deaths are from 2010. Know how many died in the U.S. from the flu (influenza) in 2010?
500. That's it.
Here's the link to the National Vital Statistics Report, Volume 61, No. 4, dated May 8, 2013. Published by the CDC, found on the CDC website.
Look for (page 89): Table 10. Number of deaths from 113 selected causes, Enterocolitis due to Clostridium difficile, drug-induced causes, alcohol-induced causes, and injury by firearms, by age: United States, 2010
(P.S. Notice how lumping pneumonia/influenza together inflates the number to 50,000? Very clever, dontcha think?)
Hundreds of thousands are dying from the flu!!!
Worst flu season ever!!!
Get your vaccine before supplies run out!!!
And if you have issue with the stats, don't flame me. Flame the CDC, it's their statistic.

beenthere, still ok with voting for obama?

Also, here are the final numbers of influenza deaths per the CDC for the following years:
2007 = 411 deaths
2008 = 1,722 deaths
2009 = 2,918 deaths (this was the major fear-mongering swine flu season)
Remember these statistics when flu season hits and the CDC and the MSM starts spewing nonsense about getting the flu vaccine lest you be killed instantly.
con, I do have an answer for you, but I am reluctant to post it because I do NOT want to derail the topic of this thread.

It does not matter that as many as 500,000 people a year die worldwide from flu and that 3 million to 5 million a year become severely ill. (Who in their right mind would want to take a flu vaccine to prevent long-term flu complications, such as that charmer Reyes syndrome or, at theleast, a months-long hacking cough? Heck, you might even get to bury Granny if her case of flu develops into pneumonia. Now, wouldn't that clean up your Christmas gift list nicely?)
It does not matter because the United States has a bubble over it, protecting it from the rest of the world. When travelers and objects pass through the bubble, then are cleansed of viruses!
It does not matter that past flu epidemics have killed more than 1 million people worldwide. This is today, dammit, not the past!
It does not matter that it takes three months to develop a flu vaccine, with more time to manufacture and distribute it. Because once Obama is out of office, there will be no more flu!
That thing about the Spanish flu, when Wilson was president? Fake, because Wilson was a Democrat. About the Asian flu, when Eisenhower was president? Now, that one was real, because Eisenhower was a Republican. The Hong Kong flu, in 1968-1969? The part before Jan. 19, 1968, when Johnson was president, was fake; beginning with Nixon's inauguration, the flu was real. Ditto the 2009 flu pandemic -- real until Jan. 19, when Bush was president, and fake by that afternoon, when Obama took the oath of office.
Scientists say that the flu virus is tricky because it mutates quickly. We can see this borne out as the virus collides with conspiracies and partisan politics.

how many people in this country would have died without getting a flu shot?
after the jimmy carter/flu vaccine fubar, do companies get special deals from our government to produce flu vaccines?
doesn't the flu shot save taxpayers money by preventing people from getting the flu?
why in your opinion beenthere, would our government try to "sell" getting a flu shot if so few die from the flu?

About what? And who's to blame?
So there were THOUSANDS of flu deaths a couple of years ago. In 2010 we got it down to 500. So when the CDC suggests "Get vaccinated"...that's "fear-mongering" and spewing nonsense??
'pneumonia/influenza' are on two seperate lines...even you noticed that. But the diseases are very very similiar, so I don't see any sinister motive here. Besides that, the CDC also says a flu shot can HELP prevent the deadlier pneumonia. So get the damn shot so you don't make other people sick.
I also noticed that for the "2012-2013 Influenza Season Week 23 ending June 8, 2013"....we're looking at about 7,000 cases.
I'm sorry that all these people didn't actually DIE, so they could fit into your narrative. Whatever the hell that is.

the jimmy carter/flu vaccine fubar
Who can forget that one?!
"President [Gerald] Ford went on television that night and delivered a speech to the nation, telling Americans that Congress will be to blame for your deaths when the flu season begins in October. Congress caved in, and on Aug. 15, President Ford signed the National Influenza Immunization Program (NIIP)"
The last great swine flu epidemic
"This virus will kill 1 million Americans," declared the U.S. in 1976.
So here we have Jimmy Carter, dressed as Gerald Ford signing a bill into law before he was even elected!! Just to scare us.
You know who needs to be called out on this con/puzo? Bill Maher!
Wouldn't you agree? Who is the president? Who is the president?

And the problem is...?
My doctor advises me to get the flu shot. My employer gives it for free. I do it every year. I have no problems or complications. Are you seriously making an issue about this? The old, young and those who are already ill are the most at risk and should get shots. Everyone else will just be saving themselves some misery. It's a real no brainer. Except for those people on this board with no brains.

cruster made a funnie.
sad cruster suffers from the same "shoot before i aim " syndrome that affects grateful deadline.

Gee you're dumb.
You got caught picking on a Democrat president, because hey, why not. Then you dare people to Google it. Okay.
"So the vaccine for the 1976-1977 flu season included swine flu, Fineberg says, "and the argument was 'Why store it on the shelf? Why not store it in people? Protect them already.' "
The first shots were given Oct. 1, 1976. By Dec. 14, 54 cases of Guillain-Barré syndrome, in which the immune system attacks the nerves, causing paralysis, had been reported in 10 states. Thirty had received the swine flu shot in the month before symptoms appeared.
The government suspended the shots on Dec. 16, but not before 40 million Americans had received them. "The risk of developing Guillain-Barré syndrome seemed to be 11 times greater with vaccination than without," wrote Fineberg and Neustadt. Still, they noted, the risk was remote, about 1 in 105,000.
'Cooler heads are prevailing'
Joseph Califano, who became Jimmy Carter's Health, Education, and Welfare secretary in January 1977, asked Neustadt and Fineberg to investigate the swine flu program "in search of lessons for the future, not of fault in the past,"
So, the last shots were in December. Carter took office a month later. Oops.

"cruster made a funnie."
Or even a funny!!
Do you really thinkerate so? Thankify you.
Not too many people know how devious Carter was, making the swine flue debacle look like Gerald Ford's doing by shape shifting and time travel.
Speaking of time travel... "Halliburton? It's 2013!"
Am I right?

Oh I understand.
But you haven't articulated the secret code that allows me to pass on information about the secret foreign vaccine. Have you?
Who gains? Who loses?
Why is the president hiding from this?
What is the outcome?
When you know, then you'll know.
But before you know, you won't know.
Have I made myself clear?
Thinkerate. Ha, ha ha!!!

why in your opinion beenthere, would our government try to "sell" getting a flu shot if so few die from the flu?
and that is the multi-billion dollar question.
Just remember these death statistics when the CDC/MSM start spouting their numbers about how deadly the flu is in a few months.
Or I guess everyone on this board likes being LIED to?? 500 deaths ...
Funny, isn't it, how downplayed MERS is in the U.S. MSM today when it has about a 60% kill rate and has crossed into a dozen countries. But it's not a pandemic. Yet in 2009, swine flu WAS DECLARED a pandemic/global emergency when it had only 20 confirmed cases and NO DEATHS.
But nary a PEEP from the MSM re MERS.
Posted - 6/24/2013 2:02:30 PM | show profile | flag this post
OMG. Thank heaven you are NOT in the news business.
Here is why MERS-CoV is not yet big news in the United States:
"As of June 7, 2013, a total of 55 laboratory-confirmed cases have been reported to WHO. Illness onsets have occurred during April 2012 through May 29, 2013 (Figure 1). All reported cases were directly or indirectly linked to one of four countries: Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Jordan, and the United Arab Emirates (Figure 2). Most cases (40) were reported by Saudi Arabia."
And here, from three days ago at your beloved Fox News, with information contributed by the Associated Press (neither of those is "MSM" enough for you?):
It has also been on Reuters, Huffington Post, CNN, Forbes, ABC News and in medical publications, to name a few appearing in the first two pages of a Google search.
I take it from your term "kill rate" instead of "mortality rate" that you know as much about epidemiology as you do about newsrooms, journalism and search engines.
It gets exceedingly tiresome reading your posts saying that "MSM" hasn't covered subjects when they come up in news stories on the first page of a Google search. You don't seem to have "been" wherever "there" is.

I'm not sure why you follow me around this board, but whatever. Those stats are A MONTH OLD. try this link:
68 cases, 38 deaths, including FRANCE, ITALY and the UK, among other countries. Just a blip on the radar, quarantined to the health section.
But in 2009: 20 cases, no deaths was a pandemic, front page news for MONTHS.
Please explain THAT, demonstrating your wealth of knowledge regarding health issues. Go for it: both the discrepancy in the definition of "pandemic" and how a flu that has a mortality rate of 0% makes front page news.
PS. I don't watch Fox News/go on that website. But nice assumption, trying to bury the issue, bring it back to that all important question of democrat/republican, right/left, wingnut/librul. Because that, of course, is more important then being LIED TO by a government agency.
And GD? Do not try to go toe to toe with me re health issues. You will lose, despite your endless need to try to impress me with your knowledge.
Let me know what you find when you research the use of "pandemic."

Here's some more info:
2010: The WHO confirmed 55,403 cases in the U.S. THe CDC claimed there were 500 deaths.
See this article written for the 2011-2012 flu "epidemic" season:
QUOTE: In a typical year, influenza causes 200,000 hospitalizations, according to the NFID. Between 1976 and 2006, flu-associated deaths in the U.S. ranged from a low of about 3,000 to a high of about 49,000, according to the CDC.
Must be the new math. You must enjoy being lied to. See my post above regarding how many deaths the flu causes each year PER THE CDC. That 3,000 death stat? It's a LIE. Look at the numbers for 2006, again, from the CDC report.
NOW: Take note of the language used in the article: flu-associated deaths, not flu deaths. Because flu deaths is a much lower number.
Also note that they did NOT include 2009 deaths in that sentence. Because, in spite of all the fear mongering, very few people died.
But you knew that, right? Because you're such an expert in health reporting.
Looking forward to your explanation on the use of the word pandemic. Should be enjoyable reading.

One more time beenthere;
What the HELL is you point?
"flu-associated deaths in the U.S. ranged from a low of about 3,000 to a high of about 49,000, according to the CDC." "Flu associated".
Sometimes it's just influenza. Sometimes it's pneumonia. Sometimes it's a mixture. In many cases it can be prevented. Why for pete's sakes are you arguing with Grateful when all she is doing is agreeing with you that there are people out there getting sick?? When you get into tens of thousands, why are we quibbling over 500?
Are you THAT desperate to come up with another conspiracy??? Get. A. Life.
Even better: Get. A. Shot. So that way your tin-foil hat existence won't infect the rest of us.

mp, the point is that beenthere HAS no point, just a lot of disconnected factoids put to use in a bunch of unwarranted slams against the dreaded conspiratorial "MSM."
Posted - 6/26/2013 12:25:04 AM | show profile | flag this post
Hey, beenthere, stuff your little two-bit challenges in your ear.
I've covered (reported and written about) health research for YEARS. Not five, not 10 -- MORE. I don't have time, except for a few grins with morning coffee, to piss up a rope with a conspiracy theorist. You're so hellbent on slamming "MSM" that you're not even capable of doing basic research until you get called on it. You're not the kind of person in whom I invest time. Go worry yourself silly about MERS and skip your flu shot, if you want to. It's hardly worth making a federal case over your own choice.

Why should we have seat belts in our cars when fewer people are dying in traffic accidents/
Maybe the seat belts are saving lives.
You know, like the flu vaccine.
Yes, some years as few as 3,000 people die from the flu. Some years, it kills 49,000 in the U.S.
Bet you also believe there's a government conspiracy involved in getting people to wear parachutes when they jump out of a plane. Let's go skydiving sometime -- and see how strong your convictions are then.

And poor con...
he's still clinging to Michele Bachmann's faux pas linking Jimmy Carter to swine flu.
It was one of many gaffes she pulled on the campaign trail.
But it's funny to see him wiggle trying to defend his ignorance of history.
Yes, cruster, mp and everyone else here is correct. The Swine Flu debacle happened before Jimmy Carter took office.
