Great reading for all freelancers ...

Just read the post -- apparently now even the Atlantic doesn't believe it needs to pay writers -- even those with 25 years of experience:

Atlantic Disgraces Itself
In my opiniion, Atlantic's message to Nate Thayer is insulting and disgraceful. Professional writers should boycott the Atlantic and let the magazine publish the journalism of non-paid amateurs. Then let's see how long they can retain their readership. Marc

I'm not sure why this would be "great reading for all freelancers." So a mature writer turned down work that didn't fit his business model instead of succumbing either to a defeatist mindset or to any hierarchy of prestige that writers imagine for themselves.

A lot of places don't pay
Huffington Post doesn't pay among others.
I do know people who work at the Atlantic and are paid staff members, so they do pay -- they just choose not to pay some people.
I just applied to a job where, I'm assuming, the editor wrote repeatedly, "You cannot be working for a wireless carrier/tech company and write for us."
That to me suggests that a lot of people are doing this -- likely for free and to hawk their product. So writers are now competing with PR and marketing people to write stories -- because they will write them for free.
And many of these disreputable online pubs are content whores.
Ah, journalism, you are truly dead.
