Hi there, I finally renewed my subscription to Avant Guild. I am disappointed with the number of magazines in their How To Pitch section. I thought the number might have grown over the last year, but it doesn't seem to have grown at all. What do you suggest I do to get the most out of my $55 subscription to Avant Guild? What am I not utilizing here that I should be? Thank you! Heidi |

Also looking to optimize the investment I wonder why more magazines that use freelancers are not represented? Hope someone else will offer advice... |

I'm also scratching my head on this one. I'm also disappointed that the forums are hard to find. My husband works in IT and he still attends networking meetings where people are supportive, even those who are competing for jobs. They're great about sharing resources and leads and helping to navigate other job seekers through companies they've worked for in the past. I wish writers on these forums were more helpful. |

>>> I wish writers on these forums were more helpful. <<< In earlier days, they were, to the extent that anyone can be on a completely open, anonymous forum. An influx of newbies and non-professionals made it discouraging to do so. Maybe you could take the initiative to revive it; and we'll all hope that the forum-killer from "current events" doesn't attempt to commandeer it, as has been tried in the past. |

You Get What You Give I think the idea of paying for information is an interesting one, but in reality, if you're going to be a full-fledged freelancer, you need to learn your own markets. Sometimes the insurance options are good, but realize that even the updated WTPs may still include outdated information. You can use them as a guide, but realize you are still probably going to have to make a few phone calls. I used to love the forums, but they're tougher to find now. c. ----------------------------- Ms. Write's Guide to Freelance Life! www.mswritesguide.blogspot.com |

How to Pitch is interested and has helped me. I would be subscribing to The Atlantic anyway so to get that included makes it essentially $35. Plus, it's a tax write off so it basically pays for itself. |

How 'How To Pitch' Works Hi Heidi, The reason the number of outlets in How To Pitch varies is that we only feature magazines when we can interview senior-level editors about their assigning processes. Unfortunately, that means that some publications will decline to participate to various reasons. It could be that they aren't accepting pitches from writers they don't know, the magazine is going through changes, they don't have a freelance budget, or they just don't have time to be interviewed. And, with some pubs, they'll agree to be in the column one year -- at which time you'll see the HTP article -- and decline to be in it in another. In those cases, we disable the article so that you're not pitching based on outdated information. We're always on the lookout for new pubs to feature, so keep checking the column daily so you don't miss anything. Thanks for your feedback and for being AvantGuild members.
