Three formerly deemed "harmful" substances have been approved for use based on studies conducted by Kraft itself, which petitioned to change the classification of the chemicals.
Nothing like unbiased research. FDA, keeping corporations' bottoms' line safe, putting consumers at risk.
WASHINGTON (DC) - The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has amended regulations that once banned the use of sodium benzoate, sodium propionate and benzoic acid in meat and poultry products, the Food and Drug Administration has announced.
The three preservatives had been on the list of prohibited antimicrobial substances the FSIS considered to have the potential to conceal damage or inferiority in meat and poultry.
The change follows a petition by Kraft Foods Global Inc., which wants to use the substances to help inhibit the growth of Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria that causes serious infections in newborns and the elderly; and Kemin Food Technologies, which wants to use sodium propionate and benzoate in their liquid form as antimicrobial agents.
Based on data gathered by Kraft and Kemin, the FSIS has determined that the use of sodium benzoate, sodium propionate and benzoic acid is safe when meat producers use the dosages prescribed in the amended regulation.

... like eating trace amounts of preservatives is more unhealthy than eating the hugely salted, obviously unhealthy products like spam, hotdogs and baloney.
It like arguing the crack pipe has lead .. but ignoring the cocaine.
BTW . you should also read what you post: theres noting there that says the chemicals are harmful to health. .. unlike listeria, which does kill people and sicken people. (there was a processed meats outbreak in canada a few years back)
the FDA concern was that the chemicals "conceal inferiority in meats" .. which shouldnt be a huge surprise given .. the cuts and scraps of last report that make up processed meats anyway.
Dont like it. Dont buy it.

Dish me up some of that Listeria. I'd like a side of E. coli with that!
Did you know that your dog could die from eating onions?
