Politifact's "lie of the year"
Posted - 1/19/2013 11:06:43 AM | show profile | flag this post
turns out to be true.
That...uhh, let's say "error"...probably cost Mitt Romney the critical state of Ohio. And it would appear that Politifact was playing politics with the quote instead of accurately reporting it.
The sad part is that the quotation could have...and should have...been accurately reported at the time. It's not as though there was any reason to wait three months for the correct words to magically appear.

There were two parts to Romneys claim
1) Jeep is going to build Jeeps in China. True. Everyone admits that.
2) THAT was going to be at the expense of American workers. Romney's exact quote was " "I saw a story today that one of the great manufacturers in this state, Jeep, now owned by the Italians, is thinking of moving all production to China,"
"ALL PRODUCTION" The Fiat statement at the time reads: " "Fiat Says Jeep® Output May Return to China as Demand Rises" stated "Chrysler currently builds all Jeep SUV models at plants in Michigan, Illinois and Ohio. Manley (President and CEO of the Jeep brand) referred to adding Jeep production sites rather than shifting output from North America to China."
Despite clear and accurate reporting, the take has given birth to a number of stories making readers believe that Chrysler plans to shift all Jeep production to China from North America, and therefore idle assembly lines and U.S. workforce. It is a leap that would be difficult even for professional circus acrobats.
Let's set the record straight: Jeep has no intention of shifting production of its Jeep models out of North America to China."
So--the first part--Jeep will build in china--is true. The second--it will do so by closiing plants here in Ohio, America...is FALSE.
Politifact has it Right--and Bill Kristols Weekly Standard is wrong. And you, being the tool you are, bought into it.

The point is
ROMNEY WAS MISQUOTED AT THE TIME...and Politifact has now admitted that. The Reuters story contains the accurate quote.

Romney was NOT mis-quoted
He said: "“I saw a story today that one of the great manufacturers in this state, Jeep — now owned by the Italians — is thinking of moving all production to China,” Romney said at a rally in Defiance, Ohio, home to a General Motors powertrain plant"
He repeated it twice in one day. THERE IS VIDEOTAPE. Oops.
You also claim: "and Politifact has now admitted that."
NO THEY DON'T: A number of readers emailed us this week about news reports that Chrysler is moving forward with a partnership in China to produce Jeeps. They wondered: Doesn’t that disprove our Lie of the Year -- that Mitt Romney said Barack Obama "sold Chrysler to Italians who are going to build Jeeps in China" at the cost of American jobs?
No, it doesn’t.
We were clear in our original Oct. 29 fact-check and our Dec. 12 Lie of the Year story that Jeep intended to build cars in China to sell in the Chinese market. News reports this week don't really say anything new. They simply say that Jeep is going ahead with that plan.
Our story focused on the clear message of the Romney campaign’s ad, that jobs in the United States were being moved to China, or perhaps that Jeep was moving its entire operations to China. That is not the case and has never been the case."
So you got caught (again) in TWO lies. Give it up.

I have no influence
over what partisan crap you choose to believe.

would think that actual videotape of Romney stating a lie ("thinking of moving all production to China")--and stating "Barack Obama "sold Chrysler to Italians who are going to build Jeeps in China" at the cost of American jobs?"--DENIED by both Chrysler and the Italians---
That all that is a partisan lie....Absolutley no help for this guy. None.

The lie still stands...
Romney lied about the intentions for the Chinese factory.
Jeep/Chrysler executives clarified it at the time -- exactly what this says -- and Romney refused to change it.
Now, his supporters are lying on his behalf.
Romney was willing to do anything to win. He deserves the title for "Lie of the Year." He earned it.

"Now, his supporters are lying on his behalf"
You people are unbelievable! Politifact corrects the misquote and yet you persist. That is rabid, blind partisanism.

Or I should have said
Politifact's misquote has been corrected...

even when there is video clearly showing that cruiztwit is TOTALLY wrong about what he says..
indisputable video sights and sounds..
i've thought cruiztwit was many things, but i never really thought he was stupid..
i'll have to revise that judgment..

Cruzo can't accept the fact...
that Romney was even more clueless than cruzo is!
I'll bet Mitt is getting dressed right now for his inaugural ball -- he just can't accept the fact he lost.
And neither can cruzo.

The FactChecker stands by its original assessment...
Mitt's ad still gets Four Pinocchios:
It stands as "Lie of the Year."
Chrysler is NOT shifting ALL Jeep production to China as Romney claimed.

As he ALWAYS does
etwinkie shifted the goalpost so he could be "right." If he'd stick to the facts he wouldn't have to do that.

Not shifting ANY goalposts, cruzo...
I just made a slam dunk.
You can't even get your sports metaphors correct.
Did you read the link?
The Washington Post Fact Checker took up the latest claims from the Romney apologists -- and said their decision still stands.
It's all over the political blogoshpere today. And Romney's backers have even MORE egg on their face.
