Sad day for America

"'In the intervening 225 years
America has grown to become the greatest and most successful nation on Earth.' AGREED."
And EVERYTHING ELSE I said supported the statement with which you agreed and contributed to America's success. Why in the hell would you prefer something that is diametrically opposed to that?

"you guys are bitter because you ran a sucko campaign
with a sucko candididate"
That's not it at all. We're bitter because Obama is off on such a tangent from the things that made this the greatest country on Earth.
Even left wing opinion writers are calling Obama's policies "The BIG Deal," a play on the words of FDR's New Deal and an acknowledgement of the size of the federal debt and the largesse that the president has been handing out, e.g., more people on welfare, disability and food stampt than at any time in our history.

Cruiser writes "the majority of voters who elected him see the future...of government largess, handouts and entitlements...at the expense of those who work and have been successful."
oh really ? the majority of people I know who voted for Obama (myself included) are well educated professionals with good jobs who pay a lot of taxes and don't rely on entitlements. And if some of my taxes go to help other
Americans who are less fortunate, I'm okay with that.

Beg to differ
mpdodgson, your comments as always seem well thought out. However, your last line, "I CANNOT see the future, but I'm pretty damned confident it's going to be better than one being run by someone who says f*ck you to half the country." can be interpreted as an unintended truth, which I'm sure you didn't mean it to be. Obama definitely is the one who has said "f*ck you" to half the country.
He has shown no effort to unite this country, only to divide. Has he worked to improve the job picture? No. Has he fronted a campaign to paint those who have built businesses (which are good for the country and employ americans) as evil? Yes. Has he promoted class warfare? Yes. Is he working to force americans who work to financially support every want of those who live off the system? Yes. And so on.

you live in such a narrow, cloistered world. You really need to expand your horizons and see how people REALLY live in places other than hoity-toity NYC.
There are millions of Democrats and a significant number of them have convinced themselves that theyt depend (legitimately or not) on the government largesse I described.

I didn't expect
GW Bush to attend the Inaugural. His Dad has been ill and was in the hospital for such a long time. His place is with his aging father. My prayers are with Geo HW Bush and for an imminent recovery of his health.
I also didn't expect Mitt to show up either. There's nothing that says the guy who didn't win has to show up.
Al Gore was at Dubbya's Inaug .. but of course Al was also the outgoing VP and tradition does tend to have the VP there. John Kerry was at 43's 2nd Inauguration. Maybe it's former Massachusetts Governors who traditionally don't show up, like Dukakis.
I think it was orthicon who wondered out loud what Mitt was doing for the official Inauguration. I imagined Willard "Mitt" was holed up in the fort made of his dining room table and sheets ..
.. in the fetal position. Of course that's just a guess, I have no corroboration, but can't you just picture it?
The guy who spent millions of his own money and then spent billions of other people's money in order to become President of the United States, only to lose twice shows his maturity by statements like he didn't want to be president anyway and he's not going to watch the Inauguration, so there :p. Why couldn't he or his people have just said they wished the President well or we're proud of our participation in our Constitutional system that has survived for over 2 centuries or just kept their whiny yaps shut?
I think Romney adviser, Tagg Romney, has continuously done his daddy a major disservice. He's the one who released the retarded statement that his daddy never wanted to be president anyway (I'm sure all of you who gave money to him and other gop sink holes are really happy you wasted your money on a guy whose heart wasn't in it). Tagg is the one who released (twitted) the picture of Mitt and Ann "doing their laundry" in a hotel laundry room. Ok, I get the attempt to make them look "normal". Unfortunately for Tagg, it helps to know what being "normal" actually is. The vending machine size box of detergent (Tide I believe) that BOTH had in their hands belied the the apparent message of "thriftiness". An economical sized box of detergent wouldn't have cost a penny more in the long run, in fact it would have saved them money, to carry with them on the campaign trail (their campaign aircraft) if they truly washed their own clothes along the way. Such attempts to snooker honest, hard working Americans shows the disrespect the Romneys have for those of us who actually work very hard for a living.
Maturity, grace and dignity are not words I'd associate with Willard "Mitt" Romney nor the boy he raised, Taggart.

hoity toity NYC? haven't heard that expression in years. spare me the NYC stereotype. there are a number of apartments in my building that are section 8 housing, so a lot of my neighbors are poor and elderly. many of my students are low income and receive financial aide. I am HAPPY if my tax dollars go toward housing and education for the less fortunate.

Hoity Toity Indeed!

one last thing..mr stereotyper.. you know nothing about my background and how and where I grew up (funky inner city nabe)and just because l live in NYC and have a good job now does not make me rich.. far from it. By NYC standards, I am barely in the middle class.

"By NYC standards, I am barely in the middle class"
That's a personal choice and I won't comment one way or the other.

Cats in Pajamas?!
Gays married! Free cell phones! No one has to work, EVER! Everyone just gets a couple dozen welfare checks and uses them to buy Cadillacs.
This is America today.
Good thing I never leave my basement and just post things online claiming I am a former journalist and expert in all things.

Where have I ever said I do not wish America to be the greatest nation on Earth? Of course Ido, and we are. And we could continue to be--by leading by example. It is no secret we lag behind many other countries in our math and science scores in our schools--so correct that. Take the LEAD in alternative energy. Don't fall behind in our infra-structure. Health Care. The good ole US of A is great in so many ways..but the stats show we're not perfect.
"you guys are bitter because you ran a sucko campaign with a sucko candididate" Sorry, but I stand by that one. 5 million votes is not a squeaker.
newscred? We agree to disagree. You claim "Obama definitely is the one who has said "f*ck you" to half the country" No, he didn't. What he said was you guys have been given way too many breaks, and we're all in this together. We saw GOP Congressmen apologize to BP for our states getting in the way of their oil spill, and Republicans demand women get raped for their own good, wanting your kid to go to college means you're a snob, and all the time the markets grow by tens of thousands of points while people get laid off. Oh, and your getting fired or your hours cut because of something that may happen two years from now...AND STILL the enmployment rate is better than what Bush left it.
Giving a tax break to 97% of the businesses out there is a GOOD thing--unless you're the 3% feeling persecuted. When even some billionaires think the system's wrong?? The system's wrong. You ask and answer your own questions. That doesn't help. Where has he promoted class warfare?? HOW "Is he working to force americans who work to financially support every want of those who live off the system any more than Bush did?? Did the social Security System change somehow in the past four years??
(The debate between cruise and Village re: NYC is none of my business) (and itsjusttv's comments on Mitt are dead on. Romney is a class-less rich jerk. IMO)

That wasn't a response...
it was a work of gross exaggeration and fiction. I told one of your left wing brethren earlier today that exaggeration and untruthfulness isn't going to work for you. It DAMN sure doesn't facilitate rational discussion on here.

you've been doing this 95+ years, so what do you know?

someone wrote: "trillions added to the debt for so-called "social (gag-me) justice, punishing success"
excuse me if I got lost as to who wrote this originally but l'd like to know and to have some examples of the sort of social justice makes you gag and I'd like to know how that punishes success.

Cruzo doesn't get it...
for the last four years, the GOP has fought for special treatment of a protected class. They've pushed for tax cuts for the rich and voting restrictions on the poor, elderly and minorities.
They've fought against women's rights to choose, access to health care for those who don't have it and against gay marriage.
They've wrapped all of this, quite falsely, in terms of "Liberty."
But they've ignored "Equality."
That one word sums up what Obama and the Democrats have been fighting for -- and what the GOP has been fighting against.
And without equality -- liberty can't exist.
Posted - 1/23/2013 10:30:27 AM | show profile | flag this post
What Obama and his unthinking minions
are fighting for is equality of OUTCOME, which was NEVER guaranteed by the Founders. All they promised was equality of opportunity...which they delivered. It's up to each individual to succeed or fail on his/her own.
Posted - 1/23/2013 10:40:50 AM | show profile | flag this post
unfortunately, everyone does not/did not have equal opportunity.
Posted - 1/23/2013 12:17:00 PM | show profile | flag this post
Regarding the Founding Fathers..." All they promised was equality of opportunity...which they delivered."
The word "equality" does NOT appear in the Constitution as written--or even in the Bill of Rights. Which made sense since neither Blacks or women were equal in any way. You may be thinking of the Declaration--which is fantastic document--but not the Law.
Posted - 1/23/2013 2:06:53 PM | show profile | flag this post
And it IS equality of OPPORTUNITY...
that Obama and the Democrats are fighting for -- and the GOP has been opposing for four years, cruzo.
Changing voting laws, denying access to medical care for women, banning gay marriage -- none of these things are blocking the outcome. They each try to deny groups of people OPPORTUNITY for equality.
Posted - 1/23/2013 2:22:14 PM | show profile | flag this post
equality of opportunity PROMISED!
To all Americans by the founders. ALL Americans.
People who didn't own property.
And a few more.
But other than that PROMISED!

Well if you don't like it you can move....
I guess Saudi Arabia is pretty much your type of place: oil, theocracy, greed, no taxes, no abortion, anti woman .... Or maybe invent a time machine and go back to 1800. Just avoid the northeast ... That still may be to progressive for y'all, with the free blacks and Harvard elites.
I LOVE HOW SOME LIBERALS, WHEN DISAGREEING WITH MORE CONSERVATIVE PEOPLE WILL CAST A HUGE BLANKET OF ASSUMPTIONS ABOUT THEM. THE DEMOCRAT POLICY OF CALLING PEOPLE NAMES AND DISCREDITING THEM WITH UNFOUNDED CHARGES. OH, AND YOU CAN'T GET PAST RACE. YOU RARELY HERE SOMEONE WHO'S ANTI OBAMA'S MENTIONING ANYTHING ABOUT RACE. BUT IT'S COMMON TO HEAR LIBERALS BRINGING IT UP AT EVERY OPPORTUNITY. ODD.
