Hi, all. I just sent an e-mail pitch to one of the major travel guidebooks, letting them know that a small (roughly 500-word) section in one of their books, on a topic where I have some slight expertise, could use some revising and updating, and that they should have me do it.

Getting optimistically ahead of myself: suppose they express some interest. I'm not sure what sort of rates I should ask for, or what other terms I can expect. My experience is mostly at the local-neighborhood-newspaper, $50-to-$100-for-a-500-word-story level. But if they use me, thousands (or millions?) of people internationally would be seeing the piece over the next few years, at least until the next edition. Aside from what up-front, per-word rate I should ask for, are there any possible implications for royalties or similar things? Or would that not be applicable for such a small contribution?

Thanks for any tips you can give.

The bigger scope of the company is, the more money you should receive for the work done. of course, it may sound too optimistic, but I believe that it;s rather reasonable!
