Costa Rica last Monday became the first Latin American country to ban hunting as a sport, after an unanimous and final vote from Congress.

Lawmakers had provisionally approved a reform to its Wildlife Conservation law back in October. With a population of 4.5 million people, Costa Rica is one of the world's most biodiverse nations.

The central American country is already known for its environmental mindset, with 25% of its land protected as national parks or reserves.

Under the new law, those caught hunting can face up to four months in prison or fines of up to $3,000.

Not sure why it's on this board, but....

So much for developing a series called "The Central American Sportsman." :-)

story idea?

Maybe someone can understanding why it's important to take weapons away from como wearing rednecks? Maybe your newsroom can do real journalism?

OK, OK....

But given what I think I know about local newsroom budgets in December, don't expect any reports from Costa Rica until February sweeps.

Well, unless someone makes a side trip this week while tracking down Mayans. :-)
