Job Requirements BBC News in Washington is looking for an experienced digital journalist to help oversee the U.S. edition of bbc.com/news, directing breaking news coverage and editing the homepage. The successful candidate will be a newsroom leader with a proven record of sound news judgment and accomplishment on digital platforms.


Manage the front page and the U.S. section of bbc.com/news; assign, originate, prepare, copy edit and publish multi-media, breaking news, background, analysis and features stories.

The SBJ will have a wide-ranging knowledge of U.S. and international affairs and proven news judgement under tight deadlines. The SBJ helps set a daily news agenda and must work closely with colleagues from different parts of BBC News.

The SBJ is a leader in establishing digital best practices and innovation; will be expert on the content management system and presentation options; will safeguard BBC editorial and legal standards; will work to long-term editorial mission; must have the talent and energy to inspire and manage other journalists.


Bachelorís degree or equivalent; at least 5-7 years news experience, primarily digital.

Proven editorial judgement and flair; the ability to generate and commission original journalism, excellent editing skills; experience making editorial decisions quickly and independently; excellent writing and copy editing skills.

Substantial experience working as a senior digital journalist and directing other journalists; demonstrated creativity on digital platforms.

Substantial experience as an expert user of news content management systems; able to troubleshoot technical and organizational problems.

Ability to navigate material and editorial input from multiple divisions of a news organization.


Effective communication and interpersonal skills to be able to establish rapport with people at all levels within the BBC. Highly effective team player.

Ability to work calmly under pressure. Ability to work unsupervised and to tight deadlines.

Enthusiasm and experience working with multimedia teams and innovative approaches.

Highly organized, able to plan and supervise a daily news agenda and work to long-term editorial goals.
