National Journal, a leading source of nonpartisan reporting on politics and policy in Washington, seeks a visual reporter to join a graphics team of three. The team is responsible for providing information graphics, maps and charts across all National Journal-branded platforms.

Responsibilities Include:

--Working with editors and reporters to identify graphics that complement stories written on daily, weekly, and monthly timelines.
--Locating, understanding, and visualizing data and statistics for a sophisticated audience.
--Producing interactive graphics as well as print/static graphics.
--Originating stand-alone visual features for telling the most important stories of the day.
--Keeping abreast of new techniques and tools for presenting information visually and interactively.

Qualifications of the Ideal Candidate:

The ideal candidate should have an analytical, restless mindset. Candidates should be comfortable with numbers, inquisitive, and interested in politics, government and new media technologies. Applicants should possess strong research and reporting skills, and have demonstrated the ability to create both print and interactive graphics.

Intermediate ability with the following software is required: Excel, Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign. Applicants should have a foundational knowledge of Javascript and have used JQuery, Highcharts, D3, Raphael or similar libraries.

Experience with the R statistics package is a plus. The ability to use mapping software, such as ESRI ArcView, Quantum GIS, TileMill, Google Maps/Fusion Tables, and the like would be a significant plus.

The National Journal graphics desk is a collaborative environment and the ideal candidate must be able to work closely with others in a supportive atmosphere.
