Job Requirements Academia.edu is a social platform for academics to share research papers. Its mission is to accelerate the world's research.

Many people believe that science is too closed, and too slow. We are trying to change that. Almost two million academics have joined Academia.edu, and around 3,500 are joining each day.

Academia.edu is changing the way research is done, and these changes show up in anecdotes from users. Some academics connect and end up collaborating on a paper. Others find that being on Academia.edu increases their chances of getting a job or grant. The other day a professor on Academia.edu got flown out to New York to appear in a documentary "I am Bruce Lee".

We are looking for a writer to capture these story gems from our community, and write up the stories on our blog. These are stories about how technology is changing the way research is being done. We often tell the story of Academia.edu's impact through metrics: almost 2 million users, more than 4 million monthly unique visitors, 1.6 million papers uploaded etc.

Often it is more powerful for us to tell the story with a human anecdote: a story about how Academia.edu has changed a researcher's life. How it helped them get a job, or find a collaborator, or find a key paper. Stories like these have a richness and a color that metrics don't have. People can emotionally relate to those stories sometimes more easily than they can to a raw metric like a number. We consider these human stories a critical component of telling the Academia.edu story.

Here are some of the recent stories from our blog:

You would be writing stories like these. We are looking to generate 3-4 of these stories a week. The main three aspects of the job are:

- finding academics on Academia.edu to interview (e.g. emailing our most active users, or following other leads)
- having interviews with these users, and trying to extract from their experience of Academia.edu a compelling story
- writing up the interviews

The skills you need are:

- a familiarity with and interest in the academic world
- an ability to find a compelling angle in an interview with someone. Sometimes a user will hand a story to you on a plate. Other times you will have to tease the story out of them.
- strong writing skills

We would prefer a candidate who can work full-time, but we would also consider part-time freelancers. Academia.edu is based in downtown San Francisco (Kearny and Bush). It's ideal if you are based in the Bay Area, and can work from our office, but we will consider remote candidates too.

The experience we are looking for is a combination of familiarity with the academic world, and journalistic or blogging experience. You need to know how to find a compelling angle on a topic. Your journalistic or blogging experience can be of any kind. We want to see that you can understand an audience, and write for it.

Academia.edu has raised $6.7 million from a range of venture capital firms, including Spark Capital, and True Ventures. To learn more about Academia.edu, visit http://academia.edu/about and http://academia.edu/hiring

To apply, please email Richard Price, the CEO, at the Mediabistro email above, including links to articles/blog posts you have written, and a cover letter explaining why this job sounds appealing to you.
