Milwaukee Magazine, an award-winning city magazine, is searching for a managing editor. The magazine publishes profiles, reader service, investigative and in-depth background features as well as dining and entertainment stories. The magazine is located in a vibrant downtown of a revitalized Midwestern city and serves the entire metro area.
Responsibilities
-Edit narrative and service features, improving structure and readability while maintaining the writer's voice
-Write features - narrative and service
-Edit and write front- and back-of-book items
-Take an active role in managing milwaukeemag.com
-Write for milwaukeemag.com
-Develop multimedia ideas, helping to take Milwaukee Magazine to the next level digitally
-Recruit and develop freelance writers
-Generate story ideas and leads
-Take ownership of service packages, keeping them fresh and relevant
-Help determine the overall mix of the magazine, paying special attention to long-range planning
-Participate in art concepting sessions, thinking on cover ideas, layouts, etc.; always pushing several steps beyond what we've previously done
-Shepherd the book through deadline on time and on budget
-Help manage a staff of nine, plus interns
Qualifications
The ideal candidate must be relentlessly curious; must also have:
-A four-year degree in journalism, English, communications or a related field
-5 years magazine editing experience
-Excellent reporting skills
-An editor's eye for detail, style, tone and factual inconsistencies
-A strong grasp of AP Style
-Social networking skills
-Web and multimedia experience
-An unrelenting passion for the field
