Job Requirements

Seventeen Magazine is seeking a Merchandising Director to work on all non-beauty categories (principally fashion & retail). Some of the main responsibilities are listed below:

  • Develop “big idea” opportunities (custom and multi-sponsored) while overseeing daily RFP workload; edit & approve all proposals written by supervised staff and writes proposals, as needed

  • Oversee execution of client programs, including custom, multi-sponsor and print-led digital programs

  • Conceptualize and develop unique high-impact in-book units and advertorials, including those that involve custom photo shoots

  • Liaise with Seventeen’s Editorial Department, Sales/Marketing Management, Hearst Digital Media and other Hearst titles to develop unique sponsorship opportunities

  • Attend client and management meetings to present marketing programs

  • Oversee project budgets and tracking

  • Works with Publisher and/or Associate Publisher/Marketing on special projects

  • Hire, train and supervise of staff of 2 (Associate Integrated Marketing Director and Merchandising Coordinator)

Required Skills:

  • Strong supervisory skills (maximizing staff productivity and morale), with the ability to maintain personal productivity while managing staff

  • Exceptional communicator, comfortable with writing styles ranging from strict business to extreme creative

  • Ability to communicate clearly/concisely in both written and oral presentations

  • Fluency in Word, Excel, Powerpoint; familiarity with InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator (preferred but not required); comfort with new technology (especially social media)

  • Extremely creative and quick to generate ideas

  • Clear understanding of and affinity for Teen market

  • Must work well under time pressures, be organized and able to juggle multiple projects simultaneously

Required Experience:

  • 8 years of related experience (preferably in magazines)
