TIAA-CREF public relations is part of the firm’s enterprise communications team within the marketing organization. The PR team spotlights the ways our company helps clients establish financial well-being. Specifically, we work to enhance awareness for the company’s products, services, thought leadership and the TIAA-CREF management team through external communication strategies, earned press coverage and social media programs.

This position serves as public relations lead for TIAA-CREF’s individual business and individual advisory services (wealth management) business.

The director of PR will be responsible for building and executing robust public relations programs for the company’s suite of products, services and tools offered to individual clients. This includes retirement products such as IRAs and after-tax annuities; 529 plans; personalized, objective financial advice; life insurance and an array of wealth management offerings.

To do this successfully, the director will identify and drive comprehensive, end-to-end PR campaigns spanning the full communications continuum, such as traditional press and social media tactics, content and storyline creation, and executive positioning and spokesperson platform development. The director will work in an integrated fashion, partnering closely with other members of the public relations team and those within the broader marketing organization, and serving as the official PR lead for the individual business.

The right candidate will feel comfortable providing PR counsel to senior management, serving as an official spokesperson for the business and providing issues management support as needed. In addition, the director will lead strategy and day-to-day activity for a team of dedicated PR agency resources.

•Serve as the PR lead for the company’s individual and individual advisory services businesses; externally serve as an official spokesperson
•Create, build and execute integrated PR programs in support of the individual product and service portfolio as well as relevant marketing campaigns and thought leadership
•Identify, cultivate and maintain press relationships with key targets, including personal finance and mainstream press, business press and local press outlets, as needed to reach target markets
•Drive social media efforts to expand upon traditional press programs, reach target markets and develop relationships with online influencers
•Position the firm and relevant spokespeople as the leading source for personal finance and retirement expertise and information with the news media. By extension, reach current and prospective TIAA-CREF clients by garnering earned press coverage in the outlets they read and trust.
•Work closely with the larger communications team and key stakeholders within the individual business. Also, partner closely with the individual marketing team to help the company drive consistent messaging across all platforms.
•Create the full spectrum of communications materials, including press releases, messages, talking points and spokesperson platform development
•Manage strategy and day-to-day activity for dedicated PR agency resources

•10-12 years public relations or communications experience required.
•Direct and relevant experience in the financial services industry, having served in either public relations and/or communications roles
•Demonstrated understanding of the business, market and competitive landscapes
•First-hand experience partnering with and managing PR agency resources
•Deep experience and proven track record with traditional press, as well as experience with and understanding of social media
•Experience and comfort functioning as a corporate spokesperson on both proactive topics as well as issues management
•Ability to assess and interpret facts and to develop and synthesize key messages into storylines and written materials
•Experience working with and influencing senior leaders and business partners by providing guidance and direction on public relations.
Excellent interpersonal skills, works well in a team environment and has the ability to interact effectively with other senior-level employees and outside contacts, including the press
•Critical thinker and self-starter who is willing to work proactively to identify key business priorities, opportunities and threats and work across teams to implement the necessary solution
•Organized, high-energy individual capable of working in a fast-paced and fluid environment; understanding of when to operate with urgency and/or escalate matters
•Strong oral and written communications skills and knowledge of the press
•Strong work ethic and ability to work unpredictable hours when necessary, as well as be available for travel
