Reporting to the CEO and working with senior marketing advisors, the Director of Marketing & Communications will be expected to establish and implement a comprehensive and effective coordinated marketing effort for the Foundation, including research, planning and implementation at a variety of levels and in a variety of markets.
The Director of Marketing & Communication must have the ability to think strategically and act tactically to develop, analyze, manage and execute all marketing and communications functions of the Foundation, with emphasis on heightened branding and subscription expansion for PJ Library, and working with staff across all departments.
Currently, the PJ Library program has three target audiences:
young families (end consumer)
partner communities (distributors)
donors and funding partners (partners)
The Director of Marketing and Communications will be expected to develop and implement effective strategies appropriate for each of these target audiences. These strategies will include but not be limited to all media and venues (digital, print, electronic, programs, events and others), with the stated goal of building brand recognition and increasing program engagement and support.
The ideal candidate will bring a creative yet practical approach to marketing, with an underlying strength in strategic analysis and communication. He/she will be someone with a disciplined and analytical background who can act quickly in execution. This individual must be an organized and seasoned professional who is an exceptionally gifted communicator, willing to roll up their sleeves, and be comfortable working in an entrepreneurial business environment.
DUTIES This professional will be expected to oversee HGFs long-term marketing vision, while consistently producing short-term successes along the way. Success and accountability will be based on agreed-upon metrics. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Strategic Planning & Implementation
As a part of the HGF senior leadership team, determine strategy and key goals; develop a comprehensive and integrated plan/direction for marketing and outreach for Foundation programs, with a specific focus on PJ Library.
Utilize market and internal data to set strategies and goals.
Develop and implement applications of the marketing and communication plans for all local, national, and international initiatives.
Work across the Foundation's programs and use all appropriate media to create innovative strategies and campaigns that inspire engagement opportunities and assist in fundraising efforts.
Management & Administration
Communicate and work with the rest of the senior executive team and leadership on marketing related matters.
Provide leadership to and coordinate between Departmental staff to ensure that marketing and communication efforts are coordinated, consistent, and appropriate.
Research, analyze and prepare reports and performance metrics.
Establish and enforce policies to ensure a clear, consistent, and powerful message.
Serve as liaison to consultants and selected contractors.
Teach as well as implement marketing activities.
Manage a team of 4-6 professionals and determine appropriate marketing team structure.
Oversee the marketing, communications, and advertising budgets.
Creative Development & Direction
Refine and enhance brand identities.
Develop and implement campaigns to promote brand recognition and to significantly increase enrollment in the PJ Library program.
Write and develop Foundation communication pieces to ensure that the Foundations voice is consistent and used appropriately and effectively with target audiences.
Identify merchandizing opportunities and partnerships that will enhance the Foundation brand and programs.
And other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS A successful candidate will possess:
Strong presence, strategic judgment, and common sense necessary for effective leadership.
Strong analytic, interpersonal communication and writing skills.
Innovative and critical thinking skills; ability to solve problems.
Ability to sell ideas and concepts and work persuasively with colleagues.
Deep understanding of family markets, digital advertising and social media tools/opportunities.
Bachelor's degree; Minimum five years of communications and/or marketing experience with national brand.
Demonstrable interest and commitment to the specific vision and mission of HGF.
