||Cablevisions Local Media division, which includes Newsday, News 12 and MSG Varsity, is seeking a business editor with at least eight years newsroom experience at a daily newspaper, wire service or online news publication -- preferably in the New York Tri-state area to drive local business coverage for its digital-only news operation in Westchester, Rockland and Hudson Valley counties.
This position requires a reporter-editor skilled at writing and editing stories, developing overall business coverage, overseeing freelancers and coordinating with News12 and Newsday on Long Island.
The ideal candidate is a creative, collegial self-starter with excellent written and verbal communication skills who thrives in a fast-paced digital environment. This candidate also must be savvy about growing traffic to the website and apps by regularly producing photos, videos, tweets, blog items and Facebook posts and using metrics to guide them.
Develop and execute a strategy to expand and improve local business coverage and grow traffic to the site/apps in Westchester, Rockland and Hudson Valley counties for Newsdays Westchester/Rockland/Hudson Valley website and mobile platforms.
Break business stories.
Report, write and edit daily stories, longer pieces and projects.
Ensure that the website and mobile platforms are regularly updated with quality stories, listings, photos, videos and UGC, and that the apps provide readers with a rich user experience.
Monitor growth and shape strategy using metrics.
Regularly appear on News12 to discuss stories. Work with News12 and Newsday Long Island reporters and editors.
Be a presence in the community, cultivating sources on the beat and appearing at key events to burnish the brand.
Develop a network of freelancers to help cover all aspects of local business news.
Identify and maintain relationships with third-party vendors in communities to bolster content and Newsday/Tri-states brand in coverage area.
Solid news judgment and ability to break stories.
Skilled at coming up with original ideas above and beyond the routine, daybook stories and events.
Adept at juggling multiple assignments/tasks in fast-paced digital environment.
Skilled at writing and editing clear, accurate, well-crafted news and feature stories.
Strong verbal and written communication skills, as well as planning and organizational abilities.
Flexible and collegial, willing to pitch in when necessary to work on a variety of assignments.
Comfortable shooting photos and videos.
Skilled at blogging, tweeting, using Facebook and other social media to promote stories and the brand.
Adept at using a broad base of information systems, including wires, data banks of governmental agencies and private organizations, and various other research materials.
Solid copy editor with eye for accuracy, context, spelling, grammar, readability, and legal and ethical issues.
Experienced with content management systems. Ability to post stories on the site and apps; add multimedia extras such as photo galleries, video, polls and other related items.
At least 8 years experience working as an editor at a newspaper, wire service or digital news operation.
Bachelor's degree in Journalism or related field.
Must be able to work from Westchester office and travel around region gathering news and covering events. Familiarity with New York Tri-state area is a plus.
Must be a flexible, creative self-starter with excellent written and verbal communication skills, as well as strong planning and organizational abilities.
