The Missouri School of Journalism is seeking a managing editor for its multimedia news product, Global Journalist. We invite applications for a full-time (30 hours/week), benefit eligible position. The position begins no later than August 1, 2013.

While The Missouri School of Journalism has been defining journalism excellence for over a century, it is committed to defining the future. The “Missouri Method” is renowned for its “learning by doing” approach in which students are given real world experience through hands on work at the school’s professional news outlets and partners: NPR Affiliate; KBIA-FM; NBC affiliate KOMU-TV; the digital first newspaper, The Columbia Missourian; Missouri Business Alert; the weekly City magazine, Vox,; and the Global Journalist.

The internationally recognized Global Journalist (www.globaljournalist.org) covers global issues and the challenges to a free-press around the world. Its converged newsroom produces digital, broadcast, print, mobile and social media content for local and global audiences.

About the job: The managing editor will oversee and manage the publication of news and information on the Global Journalist’s website, mobile and social media, e-book, and print platforms. The editor will partner with the executive producer of the Global Journalist weekly radio program airing on NPR station KBIA.-FM.

In addition to overseeing the daily and weekly content for digital and print platforms, the managing editor will work with the Global Journalist executive editor and KBIA executive producer in developing the strategic direction for the Global Journalist.

This position includes teaching newsroom-based courses at the undergraduate and graduate level. The students in these courses, working with professional journalists and experts from around the world, produce content for the Global Journalist.

The successful candidate will have:

• Experience as a practicing journalism professional in print, broadcast, or digital platforms
• An understanding of global issues and free-press issues.
• A desire to teach, mentor, and inspire the 21st Century’s next generation of journalists
• Demonstrated news management and editorial skill
• A proven commitment to journalistic excellence and quality standards

• A curiosity about the emerging information tools and trends and an enthusiasm to experiment and innovate
• A demonstrated ability to incorporate new ideas and technologies
• Great people and communication skills
• The ability to collaborate with students and fellow faculty


The successful candidate must have a bachelor’s degree and a minimum of five years industry experience. A master’s degree is preferred. Prior teaching experience is a plus.
