Job Requirements Are you an experienced journalist who embraces storytelling and thrives on mentoring others? Skilled at building programs from the ground up and deeply committed to having fun along the way? Grist, the nation’s leading green news site, is hiring a Fellowship Program Director to launch and manage the Grist Fellowship Program. This new project will offer early-career writers (and possibly other creators, such as data journalists and journalist-developers) an opportunity to contribute to Grist while developing their journalism skills and environmental knowledge.

You should be at ease with the fast-paced atmosphere of an online news organization, able to manage up and down, and comfortable with the culture of instruction and guidance inherent in any training program. Responsibilities will include:

• Working with Grist’s CEO and Executive Editor to help design and structure this new program, including both internal and external strategies (e.g. recruitment, marketing)
• Selecting the first and each succeeding new class of three fellows, ensuring that each group reflects diverse backgrounds and experiences
• Working closely with each fellow to devise a plan of action that aligns the fellow’s interests and skills with Grist’s editorial needs and strategies
• Helping fellows develop and execute their ideas and editing their work (with assistance from other Grist editors)
• Providing regular feedback and evaluations to fellows

Qualifications:
This is a full-time role located in our Seattle office. It is expected to be part project management, ***part teaching/mentoring*** and part hands-on journalism. As such, the ideal candidate will have the following:

• Strong journalism background, editing and story development skills
• Experience working with and coaching less experienced writers
• Appreciation for a collegial environment, leading and working closely with staff
• Passion for spreading awareness of sustainability and the environment, along with an ability to occasionally poke fun at same when warranted
• Enthusiasm for and expertise in the changing online news environment, including social media and mobile news consumption.

Grist offers good benefits, the opportunity to play a crucial role in an environmental media organization, and a friendly, fun workplace.
