Job Requirements About Patch:
We're Patch, the trusted voice for local news and community engagement. We inform and connect the residents in our communities and simplify their everyday lives. We launched with just 3 sites in February 2009, and now are in more than 900 communities in 23 states across the country! Patch is revolutionizing the way neighbors connect with each other, their communities and the national conversation. We have more than 13 million unique visitors each month, a 30% increase in traffic year-over-year, and are continuing to grow. Patch is relentlessly focused on enhancing our platform to provide the best news and information, and to encourage users to interact. Our audience is engaged, and attractive to marketers looking to raise awareness, increase consideration and drive sales.
Patch is a premier brand within AOL's portfolio of leading content sites. We are an entrepreneurial, start-up culture and, at the same time, able to leverage the scale and resources of our parent company. AOL is one of the largest producers of quality digital content and one of the world's leading sellers of premium display advertising. Other brands in its portfolio include The Huffington Post, HuffPost Live, TechCrunch, Engadget, MapQuest, Stylelist, KitchenDaily, Style Me Pretty, MAKERS, Gdgt, and so much more.

Giving Back:
You can't truly serve a community unless you provide the help it needs most, which is why giving back is so important to us. We do it as part of our coverage - in a dedicated space that lets local charities and volunteers find each other - and with a program called "Give 5," through which we donate advertising space to charitable organizations and contribute our own time as volunteers. Our teams care about and live in Patch communities. After Hurricane Sandy, our Local Editors listened to their communities about what their needs were. This resulted in a global corporate initiative to get badly needed goods to those areas most affected.

About Editorial:
We're looking for people who have the passion, creativity and chops to actively engage their local community through incisive reporting, professional editing and thoughtful content curation. We're looking for people who can also leverage an array of new technology, tools and social media. The contributions from the local voices in our communities are a core part of Patch's DNA; our sites are designed to be an interactive, dynamic experience for our users by inviting them to participate in the conversation via blogging, comments, and announcements.

As a Local Editor, you'll become part of a dynamic and innovative team of journalists, engineers, designers and business professionals, creating bold new solutions for our industry. You will have the exciting chance to manage and run your own site(s) -- for all things local in your community -- effectively informing and delighting our Patch users. This is far more than an opportunity to transform journalism; it's an opportunity to improve the lives of your community members.

Your Role:

* Report, utilizing multimedia skills, and create original content

* Manage and curate content on your Patch -- in every form that takes (website, newsletter, etc.)

* Build a community online and get people addicted to Patch

* Encourage user-generated content and community involvement, including recruiting a variety of contributors

* Be collaborative and constructive across all aspects of the company -- marketing, sales, editorial, etc.

* Interact, engage, reach out, and otherwise be peripatetic and ubiquitous in your community

* Be invested in the success of your community -- write for the community, not about the community

* Be flexible to business opportunities, might be asked to assist or take on a neighboring site

Your Qualifications:

* Entrepreneurial spirit and drive; start-up experience a plus

* Experience in online community building -- using tools and strategies for seeding conversations and engaging with your users

* Comfort with being a leader/local celebrity in the community, not merely an observer but a participant

* Demonstrated ability to manage your time, as well as plan and prioritize your work

* Flexibility and a willingness to change directions

* Passion for -- and adept skill in -- writing for the web, social networking and community journalism

* Understanding of the value and impact of carefully curated and aggregated content

* Ability to report on a tight deadline -- degree in journalism a plus, but not required

* Great news judgment and the ability to tap into the interests, rhythms and identity of a town

* 'Bull-doggish' reporting instincts and a willingness to ask tough questions of important people

* Understanding of copyright and libel laws

* Car ownership (a must) and flexibility to work from anywhere -- be it at home, from your car, at a coffee shop or the high school football game

* Willingness/ability to live in or damn close to the relevant market location

* Experience recruiting, managing and motivating a team of contributors is a plus
