Job Requirements Bachelor's degree in Communication, Journalism, English or other related field. Five years experience in developing and executing a strategic communications plan for a non-governmental organization working in the area of public health, agriculture, and/or the environment.
Experience in federal and/or state policy maker offices, or a campaign for elective office is also considered appropriate/acceptable. Excellent verbal and written communications skills; An in-depth understanding of and demonstrated capacity to navigate and engage the rapidly evolving communications environment and infrastructure, including innovations in social media; A strong track record of effective public relations work (advocacy related is preferred); The ability to communicate scientific information precisely, interestingly and objectively; Talent in creative problem solving; and, A demonstrated ability to work well independently and as a team member. Advanced degree may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.

Preferred Qualifications: Master's degree preferred. Ten years of related experience preferred.

About Our Company The Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future (CLF) is an interdisciplinary academic center focusing on the food system and the complex interrelationships among diet, food production, environment and human health. CLF is seeking a Public Affairs Officer responsible for:
• Expanding the Center’s public affairs and media relations capacity;
• Strengthening the Center’s policy-related media outreach activities at the federal, state, and local levels;
• Developing, refining, and implementing a strategic media relations plan for the Center;
• Cultivating and managing relationships between CLF and a wide range of media outlets;
• Increasing the Center’s media penetration among target media outlets; and,
• Conducting measurement and evaluation activities of media placements.
• Work with program staff to market CLF to new audiences for specific projects

CLF’s Public Affairs Officer utilizes a variety of communication tools ––including press releases, media events (press conferences), social media resources, webcasts, CLF’s digital assets, etc.––to establish and cultivate relationships with media sources and journalists in order to obtain optimum media coverage for CLF and to further its work.

The Public Affairs Officer oversees the high-level impact communication between the CLF and its media resources and works closely with the JHU public affairs teams. This is a senior-level position, reporting directly to the Center’s Director and requiring close, ongoing collaboration with CLF’s Director of Communications and Director of Food System Policy (as well as members of their respective teams).
