||Full-time position responsible for overseeing department that produces high-level market-data and competitive-intelligence reports that are sold via Plastics News’ online store. Manage and drive this growing product line, with P&L/budget responsibility. This job requires significant collaboration, communication and teamwork across departments, to include editorial, digital, audience development, custom content, and marketing.
Plastics News is a 45,000-circulation, weekly newspaper based in Detroit. Founded by Crain in 1989, it covers the business of the global plastics industry. Plastics News focuses on commercial, financial, legislative and market-related developments worldwide that affect North American plastic product manufacturers and their suppliers and customers. The publication's mission is to report completely, promptly, fairly and accurately, and to provide plastics industry officials with the market information and competitive intelligence they need to do their jobs more effectively.
The April 1996 launch of the PlasticsNews.com website turned the weekly newspaper into a global daily news service. The publication now offers more than 10 free e-mail newsletters, including PN Daily Email. Additionally, in 2012 PN launched a series of regular data products and market research reports that are offered for sale via the online PN Store.
Plastics News launched the bilingual PN China eWeekly as a free, weekly email newsletter in May 2005, along with a companion website, PNChina.com. Both are offered in simplified Chinese and English. Beginning in January 2013, PNChina increased the frequency of its newsletter, now renamed the PN China Report, to twice weekly. It goes to nearly 10,000 subscribers worldwide.
Oversee department that currently includes one full-time staff research analyst & several freelance contributors.
Develop, design and execute new data products in collaboration with the PN team.
Help set department strategy & direction, with input from other relevant departments.
Set and manage budget of data products department. Create & maintain regular reports showing the sales performance of the various products.
Collaborate with senior leadership team and the editorial department to plan upcoming report topics & publishing schedule.
Collaborate with appropriate staff experts to determine content scope & draft outlines for the various market data reports.
Collaborate with the marketing manager on the marketing plan for each report – to include scheduling when & where they will appear.
Collaborate with the marketing & digital team to produce descriptive content for posting in the PN Store, for promotional blurbs to be used in various PN newsletters, and for relevant print or web ads or e-blasts promoting the reports.
Work with PN’s audience development manager to identify and pull the appropriate list segments for such email blasts.
Help to identify, recruit and assess potential freelance contributors (for research, writing, editing and/or production & layout).
Create and execute the freelance contracts with such contributors, to include negotiating the scope of their work, their deadlines and their pay.
As necessary, handle customer service inquiries about the market data reports.
Negotiate and execute discount deals for certain groups (e.g., trade association member discounts, etc.) when appropriate.
Provide overall content direction and assist with editing of the written reports to ensure strict quality control of the final product.
Other duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree(s) in Journalism or Business preferred, ideally with a minor or experience in finance, statistics, and/or economics
Financial/business writer, with editorial writing/editing experience
Team player with excellent verbal & written communication skills, in addition to strong interpersonal & business skills. Communication is vital, as this department’s team members are likely to be working remotely, from home offices
Strong project management skills, including an advanced level of organization & planning
Digital product management experience desired
Ability to work within stringent deadlines and remain cool under pressure
Knowledge of plastics industry, and/or knowledge of key plastics end markets such as packaging, automotive, medical, construction, etc., is a plus
Proficient in the following software:
MS Access and InDesign experience a plus
