Job Requirements SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
The News Departmentís Washington Correspondent researches and writes news, feature and analysis/interpretation articles about federal legislative and regulatory activities and issues as they affect family physicians and relate to AAFP policy, for publications including AAFP News Now, the Academyís official online news publication. The Washington Correspondent also writes about research and analysis developed by AAFPís Robert Graham Center: Policy Studies in Family Medicine and Primary Care. The Washington Correspondent reports information in these topic areas to other department staff to assist them in their researching and writing activities. He or she also participates on interdivisional teams to ensure communication to members is integrated with the AAFP's overall message. He or she travels on assignment to family medicine practices and yearly conference and shoots photographs to accompany articles.

REQUIREMENTS:
This position requires a Bachelor's degree in Journalism, English or related field, plus 4-6 years of journalism or related experience, including writing (news, features, analysis/interpretation, conference coverage) and photojournalism. Must have experience in covering health care issues in legislative, regulatory and health policy context. Must have knowledge of the health care system; physician issues; legislative/regulatory processes; digital photography; and writing for physician publications. Other requirements: research skills (medical literature, Internet); basic statistical skills (to interpret study data); strong organizational skills; strong interpersonal communications skills for regular contact with AAFP Board members, other AAFP members, staff, and the public; and ability to meet multiple deadlines, to work as a team member, and to perform tasks independently, especially when on assignment away from an AAFP office. Strong computer skills in Microsoft Suite needed. The physical ability and stamina to travel, to lift approximately 35 pounds (camera, computer), to work long hours, and to proofread detailed and lengthy copy required.
