Job Requirements Associate Editor
Does technology fascinate you? Are you a versatile and talented editor and writer? If so, then we want to talk to you: IEEE Spectrum, the monthly, general-interest magazine of the IEEE, has an opening for a junior editor in our midtown Manhattan office. This is a full-time position at a stable publishing organization, with excellent benefits. The job will involve international travel and work for our award-winning print (circulation: 425,000) and online publications.
You will be given outstanding resources to cover a fast-moving technology beat, as part of one of the most talented and supportive staffs in magazine journalism. We are looking for a journalist who can cleverly and adeptly explain the physics of a new, cutting-edge semiconductor for one story and vividly convey the color and excitement of a solar-car race in an Australian desert for another. You’ll have the opportunity to edit and write feature articles and news and personal-service stories, to blog, to write and record radio, podcast, and video segments, and to help formulate and produce special reports. You’ll work with top art directors, illustrators, and photographers on articles that dazzle for their design as well as their content and style. Some of your radio segments will be broadcast on National Public Radio stations and in syndicated programs.
The ideal candidate will have an academic or professional background in engineering, computers, or physical science, and at least three years of experience covering technology or science as a reporter. You will love this job if you are naturally curious, if you are fascinated by technology, science, innovation, and the human and social implications of technology, if you don’t mind traveling, and if you have the energy and temperament to write about very fast-moving subject areas. A journalism degree and experience with web publishing and multimedia are both desirable.
Our publisher, the IEEE, is the world’s largest professional association for the advancement of technology. We offer a competitive salary commensurate with experience and a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, 401(k) plan with company match, a defined contribution retirement plan, a tuition reimbursement program, flexible spending accounts, company paid life insurance, and a business casual dress code.
