The purpose of this role is to help facilitate the smooth and fair selection of manuscripts for publication in the journal, IEEE Access, in accordance with IEEE policies and publishing standards. This position provides a pivotal point of interaction with authors, associate editors and reviewers, as well as other volunteers necessary for scheduling, quality control, financial administration, and consistent operational activities for this all-electronic journal. The Publications Editor must utilize the best, most cost-effective methods in carrying out tasks.
• Assist the Managing Editor, the volunteer Editor-in-Chief and the Editorial Board in planning and carrying out all up-front editorial aspects of publishing in IEEE Access.
• Interact with Associate Editors, reviewers, authors and Editorial Board members in support of planning, quality control, reviewing, and readying for production all materials for publication.
• Liaise with volunteer editors, authors and reviewers in review process to meet deadlines; provide guidance and technical support on web-based manuscript submission and peer review system; liaise with authors and staff members to ensure materials needed for production are delivered in a timely manner.
• Contact authors and guest editors to ensure that accepted materials are complete and ready for production.
• Support all journal objectives, including quality, schedule, budget, Editorial Board communications, and special projects.
• Schedule and implement recurring requirements in support of administrative and editorial calendar, including coordinating annual Editorial Board meeting, preparing freelance contracts, administering nominations of new Editorial Board members, and preparing PSPB reports.
• Maintain the IEEE Access website by implementing monthly updates on current content, future schedule, and other items as necessary.
• Provide administrative support such as processing purchase orders, invoices and expense reports.
• Bachelor's degree in English, Journalism or related area required. Advanced degree in these areas is a plus.
• At least 2-4 years’ experience on a scholarly journal.
• Thorough knowledge of publishing procedures.
• Excellent English language skills and ability to research, rewrite, copyedit, and proofread.
• Office procedure knowledge (including computer-based procedures).
• Excellent ability to establish priorities and promptly process and follow up on requests.
• Good attention to detail.
• Overall sense of how individual aspects of journal production come together to make a final product.
• Technologically savvy knowledge worker who seeks out technology solutions to business challenges.
• Working knowledge of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Adobe Acrobat Professional.
• Knowledge of the functionality of web-based article submission and peer review systems, such as ScholarOne Manuscripts.
• Basic web production skills.
• Strong sense of professionalism and excellent sense of discretion.
