Job Requirements As a member of the Editorial and Creative Services Team within the Communications Department, the senior communications specialist works to advance the Institute's message to external and internal audiences, through active project management of communications led events, marketing collateral, story reporting, and writing for the various Communications outlets. The position involves;

Interviewing, reporting, and writing of articles and content for internal and external audiences for the variety of Communications outlets, including Paths of Progress, Inside the Institute, DFCI Online, and our external Web sites.

Serve as beat leader and project manager for assigned beats, which includes:
o Developing and maintaining relationships with beat sources
o Proactively seeking ideas for stories
o Act as main point of contact for beats' communications needs

Serve as Associate Editor of staff biweekly newspaper Inside the Institute, assisting the editor in the ongoing development of the biweekly staff newspaper, including:
o Story assignment and development
o Editing and proofreading
o Production
o Distribution

Manage Communications led events either as the event manager, or by identifying, hiring, and collaborating with an outside event manager.

Manage a variety of creative projects including Fact Book, brochures, posters, invitations, advertisements and videos for staff, patients and families, and donors, and support a great range of programs and events, including Jimmy Fund events

Serve as department liaison for Development's Impact newsletter and Dana-Farber Report

Bachelor's degree, or equivalent, required.

Seven years of communications, publishing, or event management experience, preferably including some healthcare experience in medical and scientific environments.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
o Excellent written communication skills including:
o Idea research and generation
o Story development
o Interviewing
o News and feature writing
o Understanding and application of style guides (such as A/P stylebook)
o Understanding of magazine and newspaper journalism conventions
o Strong project management skills
o Demonstrated event management skills
o Excellent attention to detail and proofreading
o Strong client/customer service skills
o Familiarity with print production process
o Ability to create story narratives in print, online and video formats
