| Job Requirements |
Recreation magazine publisher seeks a managing editor with unsurpassed editorial skills, as well as strong organizational abilities. The managing editor must be a team player, tough yet tactful, friendly yet authoritative, and must be able to inspire a team of independent, professional people.
Organize, supervise, and participate in the development of all copy submitted to the magazine; work with management in the development of yearly editorial calendar; set and enforce editorial deadlines.
Consult with editors, designers and publishers regarding content for each issue; provide evaluation of manuscripts to editors, as needed; supervise the submission process and tracking system.
Work within an established budget, negotiate agreements with writers, and acquire manuscripts. Work with key internal staff and external freelancers, and guide all manuscripts through the editorial process.
Recommend various personnel actions including, but not limited to; hiring, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers, and vacation schedules.
Responsibilities:
* Plan and assign stories to freelancers and in-house staff
* Create, maintain and update editorial schedule
* Provide input and answer questions from writers and in-house editorial staff
* Research/write feature stories
* Compile freelance pay sheet for accounting
* Copy edit
* Travel required
* Proof final editorial pages
* Write and edit copy for special projects, as assigned by the editor/publisher
