We are seeking a Supervisor Transactions & Journals Production in our Piscataway, NJ location. This position will be responsible for providing management to the Periodicals Production Services area within IEEE Publication Operations by planning, organizing and executing the layout and page composition of IEEE transactions and journals so that it supports the IEEE strategy for delivering high quality publications in both print and electronic form. The Periodicals Production team is responsible for accurate and timely delivery 78 journals titles. Using a completely digital, xml-based workflow, the team produces over 560 issues annually in both electronic and in print form.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervise the functions of the department and the staff and vendors to ensure that they accomplish their work on time and on budget.
Identify opportunities for the department to improve operating procedures and policies in order to effectively meet the changing needs of the marketplace.
Oversee the general workflow in the Transactions/Journals Production department on a daily basis. Supervisor also carries a share of department page workload.
Supervise all production editors, assisting with general, technical, procedural and scheduling problems.
Ensure that all production editors meet established schedules and deadlines, and maintain a high degree of accuracy and consistency of page presentation, while preserving the integrity of the electronic materials.
Responsible for electronic layout of Transactions/Journals pages in accordance with established editorial style manual. Maintain accurate and high-quality page presentation and perform QC checks on all pages before releasing to print vendor.
Creatively seek solutions to problems associated with layout and output.
Ensure that all Transactions/Journals shipped to vendor have been properly paginated and formatted to meet our XML tagging requirements.
Direct the training of production editors in using Adept [Epic].
Keep up to date on all changes to the FOSI and revisions to the EPIC program and WMS.
Work with Managing Editors staff editors and immediate supervisor regarding prioritization of scheduling and deadlines.
Establish guidelines and procedures for the production editors to follow, in order to help streamline the workflow.
Perform quarterly and annual performance reviews of staff per IEEE policy.
Ensure the integrity of all electronic information in accordance with the IEEE established Transactions DTD.
Attend Managing Editors weekly production meetings and provide appropriate feedback to the Production staff.
Work with Dir. Periodical Editorial Services and Managing Editors to ensure that production staff is following the correct priority and schedule of publications being released for printing.
Work with print vendor to resolve postscript related problems, as well coordinating last-minute author or editorial revisions.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelors Degree or equivalent experience preferred.
At least 5 years experience in magazine or book production, with knowledge of electronic publishing processes.
Must have a complete understanding of typesetting / composition, including leading, kerning, tracking.
Must be familiar with Word processing or text formatting programs (e.g., MS Word, WordPerfect, Troff, WordStar, TeX and LaTeX).
Knowledgeable about basic file structure and computer operation.
Knowledge of Unix (SunOS) desired.
Must know TeX for purposes of making corrections and breaking equations correctly.
Must have a working knowledge of Adobe Acrobat, and be able to work with author supplied annotated files.
