Job Requirements The Director of Communications will be responsible for providing leadership expertise to and coordination of NLADA’s total communications strategies with primary focus on press/media relations, electronic communications/public awareness and overall responsibility for content on the new Association website. This position is responsible for developing, implementing and managing a comprehensive communications plan for the Association as it relates to the Association’s goals. The plan includes strategic use of traditional press vehicles and online tools, development of press opportunities and speaking engagements, developing and leading a proactive media plan designed to heighten the organization’s visibility. The Director will manage and keep current various social media applications such as the Association Facebook page, blog, etc. The responsibility entails close coordination with programmatic staff whose major functions are content development and maintenance; overall responsibility for the Association Cornerstone magazine, including article collection, editing liaison with designer and printer; collaboration with the Director of Membership Services, responsible for developing new strategies for recruiting new members; manage in concert with other NLADA managers, the publication and dissemination of NLADA’s publications, reports, brochures, manuals, and promotional materials, with particular emphasis on editing for quality, thematic congruity and style both print and online; working with NLADA’s CEO, senior management team and staff to develop strategies on how to best project the organization’s image, mission and objectives, ensuring that all of these players are active contributors and participants in NLADA’s communications/marketing plan; review and edit support on grant applications and reports; and, provide communications/marketing, training opportunities to the Association’s members including, but not limited to, topics of technology, communications, and resource development. This position reports to the Senior VP for Operations and works closely with NLADA’s CEO and President.

Qualified candidates must have a minimum of 8 years of progressive experience in communications management and PR. Experience in nonprofits is desirable, particularly with a membership-based organization with a varied range of constituencies, familiarity with civil legal services and defender communities is important, as is an understanding of the legal system in general. A Graduate degree in journalism, communications or marketing preferred. A 4 year undergraduate degree is required. A demonstrated ability to enhance an organization’s identity/image is essential. Entrepreneurial experience to increase value of organization’s products and services is very important with at least 3 years experience with social media or online communications tools and services and database-driven websites, including the content management of the website and the training of staff. Proven leadership/project management/organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple competing priorities; excellent oral and written communications and editing skills, with particular dexterity in communicating with multiple audiences. The ability to write speeches and the ability to identify speaking opportunities for the CEO and other NLADA staff as appropriate. A strong commitment to the mission and goals of NLADA and a thorough understanding of its work.
