Interns Fight Back

youintern.jpg

A pair of advertising executives and two business students have launched YouIntern.com, which allows interns to rank agencies, get advice and provides a community through which you can snag your next assistant. Neat.

“The marketplace of information lacks any substantive content for interns,” said Dan Chaparian, one of YouIntern’s founders. "YouIntern.com was born to give interns the inside track on positions they are considering. We then invite employers to submit their internship opportunities so that every stakeholder feels involved in the process.”

There are more than just agencies on the site, but primarily, the industry is running things. Some of the other sectors have gotten weak ratings, but agencies seem to be on top. Let's take a look at what the kids are saying, shall we?

Hill, Holliday - Overall rating: 3.3 out of 5 stars

"I had two supervisors who were fun to be around when they weren't stressed out of their minds. Let's just say that they were stressed about 85% of the time."

"While it wasn't the dream environment to work in (everything was very rush, rush), let alone the dream internship job, I did learn a lot and got to see how an agency functioned as a whole."

Mullen, MA - Overall rating: 4.4 out of 5 stars
"I absolutely fell in love Mullen. When I first got there my adviser sat me down and asked me what I wanted out of the internship. After that, we spent the next 12 weeks shaping a dream internship."

Arnold Worldwide, MA - Overall rating: 4.3 out of 5 stars
"My biggest gripe is that they promote the internship as a three month job interview. However, they really just put your resume in a file of intern resumes that they cross-check when you apply. After that it seems like you are just like any other applicant applying to them again."
"The best way I can think to describe Arnold is that creatives sit on floors 17-19, planners and executives on 20, and account on 21-22, then these people do not interact unless they're required to."

BBH, NY - Overall rating: 4.6 out of 5 stars
"I spent a good chunk of time researching which was not always the most glamorous job, but it was never meaningless and definitely kept me more productive from day-to-day. For someone like me who's never worked at an advertising agency before, I was able to get a good sense of how all the different departments work with each other and with the client."
