TBWA\Chiat\Day LA Adds Three to Planning Department

After a day filled with departures, why not do a 180 and focus on hirings? TBWA\Chiat\Day LA, which me may or may not be familiar with, built up its planning department this week (the creative dept. is another story) with the addition of Neil Saunders, Catherine Heath (pictured) and Clyde McKendrick.

Heath as you may remember left Modernista! after eight months (we were initially told she was headed to Deutsch) while Saunders held executive management posts at Grey London, BBDO and Leo Burnett. McKendrick meanwhile carries 14 years of experience as a strategy director and started his own consultancy, MILK, most recently.

Miller Lite Encourages Northside Chicagoans to ‘Man Up’

Chicago is a place of manly appetites, and its food is famously suited to satisfy the hungry denizens of the city. That is why this billboard for Miller Lite by Draftfcb works on a few levels. Not only is it the outdoor counterpart to Miller Lite’s television campaign (sure to get even more airtime once the NFL regular season starts), but it’s also located above popular “foodie” tourist spot, deep dish pizzeria Gino’s East.

While Gino’s East is now a northeastern Illinois chain, this restaurant in particular is located on the border of neighborhoods Lakeview, where the Chicago Cubs play, and Lincoln Park, one of the city’s wealthiest areas. If you care to read into the billboards more (which we’ll do anyway), by combining beer with a fake luxury cologne, the advertisement connects beer drinkers (Cubs fans) to people who shell out $80 to smell fancy (rich people).

Beer and impossibly thick pizza–it’s what Chicago is all about.

Heath Rudduck Has Left Digitas

We have two credible sources who tell us that Heath Rudduck (pictured), EVP/ECD at Digitas’ Boston HQ, has left the building and will be replaced by CD Rob Rizzo according to sources.

Rudduck joined Digitas in 2007 after spending four years as ECD at Tribal DDB/DDM Melbourne. Speculation is that he was “let go” from his post. Check out his farewell email after the jump.

Draftfcb Follows ‘Realignment’ with ‘Reinforcement’ of NA Ops

As part of its ongoing “realignment,” DraftFCB announced staffing changes, specifically that the agency’s worldwide CSO Michael Fassnacht (pictured) has been named the new president of its Chicago office. In turn, Mark Modesto, who a spy alleges was actually escorted out of the agency, is no longer with DraftFCB and his regional role has been eliminated.

Fassnacht’s core leadership team will include MD Karen Sauder, CCO Rob Sherlock, chief strategic planning officer Jamie Shuttleworth, chief media officer Bob Bernstein, North America director of business development Nick Paul, group management director Mat Lignel, and director of human resources Robin Rosen.

DraftFCB’s New York office, meanwhile, apppointed Dana Maiman, most recently the president and CEO of Draftfcb Healthcare, to its Global Operating Council. Maiman will also assume executive management responsibilities for all local Draftfcb operations in New York, including Draftfcb New York and Draftfcb Healthcare. On the client tip, Mark Pacchini has been given sole executive management responsibility for all of SC Johnson’s business around the world.

Steve Farrell Out at Publicis Modem

We’ve received confirmation that Publicis Modem ECD Steve Farrell, who’s been with the agency for three years, has been relieved of his duties. The New York-based Farrell, who worked on clients including Citibank and Hasbro and led creative for the agency’s digital AOR efforts with LG, was also a GCD at Digitas, ACD at and worked as digital director at MTVN/Spike prior to joining Publicis Modem.

We’re being told that Farrell’s cohort and fellow ECD Patrick Clarke is assuming dual-duty at present time.

Update: A source familiar with the matter chimes in with this: “Publicis Modem was looking to consolidate creative under one ECD and Steve raised his hand to leave. He always pushed for the agency to be less full service and to be more focused on the emerging aspect of digital. He just finished leading the iAd work for Citi and felt he could leave with all commitments wrapped.”

Whitney Browne Latest to Say Bye to G2

Every time we try to get out, we get pulled back in. G2 has confirmed that Whitney Browne, who was director of UX strategy at the agency for the better half of a year, has left the agency. From what we’re hearing, he’s headed to BBDO.

Sources from the latter camp couldn’t confirm the hiring at press time, but according to a spy, “promised digital work never materialized” for Browne at G2 and “there’s not much for a Director of UX to do at a direct marketing agency.” Browne joined G2 last year from Big Spaceship, where he was senior user experience strategist. Prior to that, he was an ACD at Organic and had a role as information architect at HBO.

Update: Yep, sources confirm he’s headed to BBDO in a matter of weeks.

PSA: Diarrhea Not Only Embarrassing, It’s Deadly

In the world’s poorest countries, 4,000 children are killed every day, equaling three a minute, due to the lack of proper toilets, eventually causing diarrheal diseases (sorry to spoil lunch).

In light of this travesty, London-based Kitcatt Nohr Alexander Shaw put out this spot for WaterAid in an attempt to round up funds to build safe pit toilets for these suffering children. Their spots also comes with a very strong tag line. “Dig toilets, not graves.”

Big Ad Gig Clip Pays Tribute to Falco, Vents at Andrew Keller

The Big Ad Gig event, which we’ve covered ad nauseum and is closed for judging open for voting until August 31, at least reaped one pretty amusing submission from one Julie Bowman. “Rock Me Amadeus” from the late Falco gets a rework and in the process, Bowman manages to sing/rap her peace about CP+B’s Andrew Keller, who’s one of the judges.
