Hiring summer interns can be a real drag. It’s time-consuming, pretty boring, and the level of incompetence you encounter will make you fearful for the dismal future your children will be forced to inherit. Wouldn’t it be great if you could pass off this annual chore to random people on the internet? Well, Minneapolis-based agency Fast Horse is one step ahead of you and ready to launch the 2012 edition of its summer internship campaign.
Interested applicants are asked to send a resume and “‘video cover letter’ that showcases your personality, creativity and relevant qualifications” by midnight on April 8 to qualify for the contest. Fast Horse will weed out the finalists and post the winning cover letter videos to its Facebook page, determining who wins the full-time paid internship by the number of “Likes” contestants get.
A silly publicity stunt? Well, according to Fast Horse associate and self-proclaimed morning person Andrew Miller, it’s a little more than that. “Just a gimmick?” he says in an email to us. “Hardly. I won Fast Horse’s 2010 summer internship campaign through Facebook and this is where I’ve since gone on to start my career in marketing. It’s easier to fool a group of 15 than a group of thousands, which is one of the reasons why we’re again letting our fans make the final hiring decision.”
