Friendly’s Embraces Boston’s A&G

After an 18-month tryst with Portland, ME-based Via Group, ice cream/diner/restaurant chain Friendly’s has gone home team, selecting Boston-based Allen & Gerritsen to serve as its new agency of record. From what we’ve been told, A&G was selected by Friendly’s, which is based in Wilbraham, MA, without a formal review, so no word on if other agencies were pitching for the business.  The brand has also previously worked with, you guessed it, Zimmerman, in the past, but is now tasking A&G with brand strategy development that “will inform a multimedia campaign including print, broadcast, online, out-of-home, and web development.”

In a statement, let’s let the fanfare begin courtesy of Allen & Gerritsen CEO, Andrew Graff, who says, “We are honored to have the opportunity to work with one of New England’s most iconic brands. Our combination of expertise in marketing, advertising, and digital along with our intimate knowledge of the restaurant industry will drive additional growth and success for Friendly’s.”

We’ve been told that first work on the brand has already begun as of last week, but no word on a timeframe for launch.

AdAge Darling Allen & Gerritsen Plots Move to Boston’s ‘Innovation District’

Sounds like it was a big day at the office of Allen & Gerritsen, which just topped AdAge‘s “Best Places to Work” list and will soon have a new home according to an announcement made today by agency CEO, Andrew Graff. A&G’s top exec has revealed that the 120-strong agency will be moving offices from Waterton, MA to the “Innovation District” on the South Boston waterfront in September 2012 and expects to add 50 more staffers by the time the transition is complete.

In his statement, Graff said, “Creativity, technology and curiosity are at the heart of Allen & Gerritsen’s core. That’s why the Innovation District will be the perfect home for our agency.” A&G’s CEO seems like a Beantown supporter through and through as his agency not only counts local clients including the Celtics, Ninety Nine Restaurants and Bright Horizons Family Solutions, but he’s also on the board of the Greatest Boston Chamber of Commerce and is the chairman of the Ad Club of Boston.

Among other things, Allen & Gerritsen’s Innovation District digs will house the agency’s in-house production studio and allow for expansion of its Digital Incubator.

A&G Hires Digitas, Razorfish Alum as ‘Creator of Opportunities’

Andrew Graff, CEO at Allen & Gerritsen,  announced  that Joel Idelson will be joining the agency as SVP and something called “creator of opportunities,” which is a new position. It’s been both annoying and entertaining to keep up with all the new titles these days but anyhow, Idelson is a Publicis Groupe vet who was formerly vice-president at Digitas and Razorfish and most recently served as president of an experiential marketing agency named Street Attack, which has offices in Boston and New York. In addition, he spent time in the entertainment field as an artist, writer, and producer.

He says in a statement, “I am the antithesis of the typical biz dev guy. We don’t ‘sell’ anything to anyone, we solve complex marketing problems for our clients and this starts with fostering trust by building long lasting, meaningful relationships with them.” Indie agency A&G counts clients including the Boston Celtics and Partnership for a Drug-Free America.
