DDB NY Launches ‘The Girl Who Couldn’t Cry’ for Water is Life

Yesterday, DDB New York launched a follow-up to last year’s “Kenya Bucket List” for Water Is Life entitled “The Girl Who Doesn’t Cry.”

The 1:20 spot examines the difficulty of life without adequate drinking water, utilizing the realization that dehydration can prevent the body from producing tears. DDB New York tells the story of a girl born into a brothel, who picks through a landfill, watches her brother die, and is forced to marry underage. Despite the tragic events of her life the girl is unable to cry, due to dehydration. While the story can tend toward the melodramatic at times, the excellent production and editing help make the spot emotionally affecting — a thoughtful examination of how living without drinkable water can make an already difficult life worse. Gallo Assumes Director of UX Post at Tribal (Updated, with DDB Hire News as Well)

We rarely give love to the UX folks for whatever reason, so..what the hell. It looks like Peter Gallo has his own little PR machine going (or he’s a pretty decent self-promoter, either way) as we’ve received a handful tips from different IPs over the last week or so that the Brooklyn-based creative has joined up with Tribal DDB as director of UX. Truth be told, Gallo has indeed updated his job status to reflect the fact that he has joined Tribal as director of user experience strategy, to be exact. From what we’re hearing, Gallo started his new gig today. Most recently, he served as a a senior UX strategist at Grey New York–though we’ve been told that he was more “junior” at the agency.

Embellishment (or lack thereof) aside, prior to Grey, Gallo spent nearly five years at @radical.media, last serving as information architect, working on apps for the ONE campaign and Sting among other projects.

Update: Well, why leave well enough alone. Gallo succeeds Vincent Higgins at Tribal New York. Earlier this year, the latter was promoted to executive director of UX at DDB’s office in San Francisco. While we’re on the DDB tip, the agency has hired Y&R’s Andrew McKechnie, who last served as ECD out of the latter’s New York office, to serve as group creative director on its Reebok account. If you recall, DDB and Reebok reunited at the beginning of this year. Along with his three-plus years at Y&R, where he helped lead creative on LG, Land Rover, etc., McKechnie had stints at the likes of JWT, Modernista! and BBDO during his career.

LG Wreaks Havoc in Toyland

Taking a cue from Jaws, Y&R New York sets the scene in this spot for the LG Kompressor Elite vacuum cleaner. Everything is all fine and dandy, as all the toys are enjoying a day at the carpet until a couple gets separated from the group. They start, well, having fun until (cue the score) things go to hell real quick when some uninvited guests show up for dinner.

The team at Psyop (with the help of Smuggler) built a set on a stage, keeping the CG to a minimum and shot all the plastic toy soldiers, Barbie look-a-likes, designer toys, stuffed animals, etc on that set and implemented CG to give the dolls different facial expressions. The sharks and other subtleties were obviously generated as well.

Psyop CEO and CD Marco Spier says in a statement, “We of course got personally connected with the toys, their characters and the story. Carefully placing them personally on set to get the best performance out of them, kind of like actors. We also liked the idea of having unusual combinations of different characters because that’s how kids play – free form, mixing and matching, and grouping things together based on what they have no hand, or what their siblings or friends have.”

We think it’s safe to say this turned out to be a nice spot with some good imagination – much better than an infomercial of a vacuum sucking up coins and marbles. Credits after the jump.
