Barbarian Group Undergoes ‘Business Restructuring’

Yes, those who inquired via the Spy line, there are certainly “things happening” at The Barbarian Group, as we’ve received confirmation that the Cheil-owned agency is undergoing “business restructuring” across all departments. As a result, 15 positions were affected, 12 in its NYC headquarters and three in SF. In addition, the Barbarians are eliminating the executive creative director position, as co-founder/CEO Benjamin Palmer will continue to lead work across the agency as chief creative officer.

A TBG spokesperson says, “2012 was an important year in terms of acquiring new talent as well as building new client relationships. We’re taking the necessary step of restructuring across all areas of our business in order to be leaner and more flexible in 2013. Onward.”

As for the San Francisco office, which tipsters say the Barbarian Group was shuttering, sources familiar with the matter tell us otherwise, though they note that TBG SF will be moving to a smaller place in the “near to medium term.” Our sources add that the Barbarians’ Bay Area branch is “in the midst of bringing some new business,” though we’ve yet to divulge what that is at present time.

Here’s Your Quick Recap of the ‘Thunderdome for Designers’

Got two minutes to spare? If so, here’s the quick recap of what went down at the NYC installment of Cut&Paste’s Digital Design Tournament that took place a couple of weeks ago. Hey, Benjamin Palmer of Barbarian Group was there, as were plenty of others from the New York design geek community cheering participants on as if they were scratching at the DMC World Championships (more our style) or being Fred Savage in The Wizard. Since this took place on Oct. 28, there are some Halloween costumes in sight and if you want a full visual retrospective, you can peep the Facebook photos here.

ANDYs Implores You to Enter Before the Apocalypse

R/GA chief/honorary ANDYs chairman Bob Greenberg and his crew have created this call-for-entries campaign for the 2012 International ANDY Awards, which carries the message, “Enter Now Before The Apocalypse.” If you really fear the end is nigh (wait, isn’t there a Rapture also happening this month?), the ANDYs committee would like you to win “the last award of your life” before an asteroid destroys us all. Greenberg himself says that he wanted to “light a fire under people and give them a real sense of urgency to enter the ANDYs.” Some of the judges at next year’s fete including AKQA’s Rei Inamoto (who’s seemingly everywhere), Barbarian Group CEO Benjamin Palmer, Jimmy Smith and W+K’s Iain Tait. So yes, all the familiar names are in effect. Best of luck before we burn, folks.

Meet Your New ADC President

A changing of the guard has taken place at the Art Directors Club as happycorp co-founder/current JaegerSloan proprietor Doug Jaeger has ended his requisite three-year term as president and is now handing off the baton to Benjamin Palmer, co-founder/CEO of The Barbarian Group and a member of the ADC’s board (since 2008) who’s sung its praises before.

With the trend seeming to be that those bred in digital are now taking over as producers across the board at agencies, an appointment like Palmer’s doesn’t seem so leftfield. But anyhow, the Barbarian, who now becomes the 58th president of the ADC, says of his predecessor and the Club’s future, “Doug laid the groundwork for reinvigorating ADC as a cultural hub with strong year-round programming. I want the club to continue in that direction, with programming that appeals on both local and global levels and cool events in our great gallery space that connect people and provide real value to members.”

Alas, our time with Barbarian Group CEO Benjamin Palmer has come to an end. Here’s the third and final installment of our Media Beat interview with the exec, who this time discusses judging award shows and how there will probably be “no surprises” this year. Why? Because as Palmer says, and we’re sure at least some of you will agree, “The stuff that ends up actually being famous and effective ends up winning the big awards.”

TBG’s chief exec also talks about the importance of something like the Art Directors Club, which he happens to be a board member of. Anyhow, why spoil the rest? Check it out for yourself. Links to previous parts below.

In this week’s Media Beat interview, yours truly sits down for a chat under the hot lights with Benjamin Palmer, CEO of The Barbarian Group. The nearly ten-year old operation, which shifted its HQ from Boston to New York City a few years back, made its name of course by partnering with CP+B on Subservient Chicken and later developed innovative apps including CNN.com T-shirts.

In this first installment of our three-part chat with Palmer, the affable exec discusses how the relationship has been going between TBG and parent company Cheil, as well as his thoughts on social media’s importance and how brands are coming around to understanding that “the most permanent medium is the digital one.”

Stay tuned for part two with Benjamin tomorrow. In the meantime, you can also watch this video on mediabistro.com’s YouTube channel.

David Droga to Chair AICP Next Panel

Now that the AICP people are done rolling out the “case study” videos to hype their upcoming awards show, the organizers have announced that Droga5 founder/creative chairman David Droga will serve as judging chair of the 2011 Next Awards panel. In a statement, Droga, who will also serve as MC during the Next presentation at the Museum of Modern Art, says, “Since they launched five years ago, the Next Awards have really provided a spotlight for our industry’s most innovative work. The Next Awards presentation offers thought-provoking insights into the process, and I’m really looking forward to helping develop this great event.”

As for who’ll be joining Droga in the judges panel, the ad exec has helped pick a host of the usual, notable names from the industry including Bob Greenberg, Gerry Graf, AKQA’s Rei Inamoto, Barbarian Group CEO Benjamin Palmer as well as TBWA\Chiat\Day LA’s Rob Schwartz, Leo worldwide CD Mark Tutssel, Ogilvy’s Lars Bastholm…you get the idea.

Those lucky ones who win in the Integrated Campaign category also have to present case studies at the Next presentation that explain the thinking–both creatively and strategically–behind their awarded work. Other categories include Viral/Web Film, Website/Microsite, Product Integration, Experiential, and Apps. We’ve heard some grumblings about judge/chair selections made by other awards shows as of late, so how do you all feel about Droga?

People Are Still Writing Books…REAL Books

Creative Social, an ad-hoc collective of social and digital people worldwide, has published a book (yes, apparently paper books still exist) called Digital Advertising: Past, Present and Future. Clearly, the focus of the book is about how the interwebs is shaping society (or something). No idea how they’re able to predict the future though, so that’s a good ploy to read it, right?

In total, there are 24 contributors which include many names we’ve heard of including: Rafa Soto, Ale Lariu, Johnny Vulkan & Benjamin Palmer, and many others we haven’t. We could rant about how great the book is and how all the writers are colossally awesome, but we’ll leave you to do your own reading. Feel free to purchase the book here.
