Apple Officially Takes More Ads In-House

The strained relationship between Apple and TBWA\Chiat\Day has reached a new stage.

Two months after unflattering email exchanges between Apple’s head of marketing and TBWA’s Media Arts Lab surfaced as part of the extended Apple vs. Samsung copyright battle, Bloomberg was the first outlet to report that the company will now be creating more (if not all) of its TV spots in-house.

An Apple spokesperson reminded Bloomberg that the internal team, which “includes at least two people Apple hired away from Media Arts Lab”, is responsible for recent spots like this one:

The shift has been in the works since early 2013, with Apple deciding to take control of more production duties and build up its own team rather than search for a new agency.

Other outside hires include at least two higher-ups from Wieden+Kennedy: Tyler Whisnand and Bill Davenport.

No one at MAL–which recently went through some staffing changes of its own–offered a comment to Bloomberg, so the current and future status of the partnership remains unclear. 72andSunny CEO John Boiler did weigh in, however, calling the company’s decision to hire from within MAL “…an indication of some seriously broken trust.”

Wieden+Kennedy has named Colleen DeCourcy as the newest partner in its global network.

DeCourcy most recently served as Global Coexecutive Creative Director; she joins Dan Wieden, Dave Luhr, Mark Fitzloff, Susan Hoffman, Tom Blessington, Bill Davenport, John Jay, Neil Christie, Tony Davidson and Kim Papworth on the partner team.

DeCourcy worked at W+K for only eighteen months before the promotion; prior to joining the agency, she founded her own shop called Socialistic, which she ran as CEO and chief creative officer. The release states that, during her time at W+K, she has “extended the creative department’s capabilities beyond advertising, into both experience and product design.”

Her full ad industry resume includes stints in leadership positions at TBWA New York, JWT and Organic.

Savar, Eslinger, Zacharias Topline Final Cannes 2012 Juries

The Cannes committee has rolled out its final jury lists and there are some notable names, as expected, in the bunch. Namely, Big Fuel’s founder/CCO Avi Savar will topline the Branded Content & Entertainment jury as president, Saatchi & Saatchi global digital creative director Tom Eslinger will oversee the Mobile Lions and Ivan Zacharias, director on the Stink roster, will take on the jury president role for the Cannes Film Craft Lions. Phew, thus ends our Cannes coverage, we think, until the actual fest gets underway. Check out the full jury lists after the jump.

W+K Promotes Tait, Others to Partners

Wieden + Kennedy global interactive ECD Iain Tait (left) is among four execs at the agency who can now add partner to their titles. Joining him are W+K Portland managing director Tom Blessington and ECD Mark Fitzloff as well as London MD Neil Christie. This marks the first time in two years that W+K’s made partner additions, and as a result, the four new ones join a list that includes Dan Wieden (obviously), Dave Luhr, Susan Hoffman, Bill Davenport, John Jay, Tony Davidson and Kim Papworth.

While Tait’s only been with W+K since 2010, having joined from his shop Poke London, Blessington’s racked up 21 years at the agency, during which time he ran the Nike accounts in Portland and Amsterdam and served as the first managing director of the agency’s New York office. As for Christie, he’s served as W+K London’s managing director since 2004 while Fitzloff started as a copywriter at the agency back in 1999.
