Gamers Called Upon to ‘Take Earth Back’

During last night’s broadcast of AMC’s The Walking Dead, Electronic Arts debuted the above spot from DraftFCB SF for the new title coming to stores March 6, Mass Effect 3. Before you fret, realize that the spot aired after the Academy Awards ended, and many who felt like remaining on the couch (me included) flipped over just in time to see it.

Since debuting yesterday, the emotional spot depicting the end of the world, an alien invasion, and the battle for humanity’s survival has already chalked up more than 75,000 views on YouTube. Filmed over six days in Prague, “Fight for Everything” is, in a word, cinematic, so much so that it’s initially quite difficult to tell what exactly the spot is advertising. But it succeeds where it aims to, making ME:3 look enticing to gamers and non-gamers alike. Sure, it’s a little bit Halo and a little bit Star Wars, but that doesn’t make images of people running for their lives any less moving.

Also, since the Vancouver hockey riots of 2011, it’s hard to imagine a scene of mass chaos that doesn’t include two young people making out. Maybe that’s the “better with Kinect” feature Electronic Arts is hinting at. Credits after the jump.

Draftfcb SF Promotes a Few to GCDs

Just days after announcing the impending arrival of its new chief creative officer, Draftfcb San Francisco has elevated a couple of agency vets to group creative director including Colin McRae and Tony Vasquez, who have racked up five and 10 years, respectively, at the agency and most recently picked up Bronze Lions at Cannes for their “Your Mom Hates Dead Space 2” campaign.

In addition to McRae and Vasquez’s promotion, Draft SF has also bumped up Julie Scelzo to GCD. Scelzo, who joined the agency in 2009, has worked on Dockers (“Wear the Pants,” for example) and also leads creative on Del Monte’s entire pet product portfolio.

Chris Ford Resurfaces at Draftfcb SF

Remember Chris Ford, whose last stint as an ECD at Ogilvy Sydney lasted just under a year? Well, the creative exec has now landed back in San Francisco to take on the chief creative officer role at Draft San Francisco. Ford, who officially assumes his title at Draft on August 29, will lead the creative departments in both San Fran and the agency’s Seattle office. As mentioned, it’s a homecoming for Ford, who, before heading down under to join O&M, spent 11 years at Goodby and worked his way up from senior copywriter to GCD, working on accounts including Comcast, TiVo and Saturn in the process.

During his career, Ford had other stints in the Bay Area at JWT and Wolfe/Doyle and spent time on the East Coast as an ACD at TBWA\Chiat\Day. In a statement, Draftfcb’s North American ECD Tom O’Keefe says, “Chris is exactly what this office needs right now. Under the watchful eye of leaders like Colin McRae, Tony Vazquez and Julie Scelzo San Francisco has done great work recently – we can’t wait to see how far they’ll go now with Chris at the helm.”

FYI, Todd Tilford, who was announced as Draftfcb Chicago’s CCO a few weeks back, officially started yesterday.
