W+K NY, SoCo Do Barbershop Karate

It takes a comfortable man to perform karate in a barber’s robe and tinfoil, not to mention skintight jeans and snakeskin boots. Meet the face of Southern Comfort, a moustachioed man we’ve met once before in “Shampoo,” one of the previous spots in W+K’s SoCo “Whatever’s Comfortable” campaign.

Then, he was meditating amidst soft suds, opening his eyes only to check out the woman across the barbershop. Now, he’s showing off for all the ladies.

Director Tim Godsall and the W+K creative team wrote the spot after seeing our protagonist’s casting tape for “Shampoo,” in which he did karate – he’s actually skilled in the martial art, and owns a few dojos. Given the nature of the campaign, they wanted to play to his natural skills. It was a good choice, because this is the best spot yet. While “Beach” and “Shampoo” play to the relaxed side of comfort, “Karate” has more personality and ease. Especially when backed by “I’m a Fool to Care,” by Les Paul and Mary Ford, this barbershop guy paints a poignant picture, and will probably ascend to be your new role model.

VB&P, Healthy Choice Say Screw Your Diet

“For years I thought I hated children’s laughter. I had no idea, I was just hungry.” In VB&P’s first work for Healthy Choice since winning the business for the ConAgra brand back in May, one woman recounts her days with hardcore dieting gang the “No-Carb Queens.” They destroy chicken wings and break baguettes in the super market. In a second spot, a man laments his time with a juice fast cult. “Bruce likes solids too,” he reassures himself.

The “online manifesto” video in this series (below) collages together every piece of diet advice you’ve ever been given. Healthy Choice’s point? “Don’t diet. Live healthy.”

Thank you, VB&P, for not going the infomercial route and instead making fun of saccharine, overly dramatic diet ads. I still wish you’d excluded close-ups of (undoubtedly disgusting) microwave-melted parmesan, but can forgive those because of the solid concept and funny writing. Healthy Choice is still a kind of diet, but these videos make it seem like a cool sarcastic best friend food, not the annoying nagging one who invites herself over and drinks all your wine (that’s South Beach).

HBO Doesn’t Want You to Be a Cheap Bastard this Xmas

With the help of Biscuit Filmworks’ Tim Godsall and BBDO NY, HBO is plugging DVD box sets of its hit shows like True Blood, Entourage as well as the underrated Eastbound & Down. Here, we see fans of the various shows’ significant others mimicking episodes and playing Grinch instead of actually going out and buying the damn box sets for their loved ones. Well, at least they’re being somewhat innovative.

We know it’s been diminishing returns with Entourage over the past couple of seasons, but we figured we’d throw Vinnie Chase and company a bone since it’s the season and all and post this clip at the top. As an added bonus, if you insist on showing off your ingenuity, there’s a site for you to make AR-enhanced puppet versions of select scenes of said shows here. Check out the funnier Eastbound clip and the, um, hi-tech True Blood episode rendition along with credits after the jump.
