Denny’s Kicks Off Second Season of ‘Always Open’ Series

Gotham, Electus, College Humor Productions and the gang at DumbDumb (aka Will Arnett & Jason Bateman) have joined forces once again with funnyman Champ Kind David Koechner to launch season two of “Always Open,” which if you don’t know is a series where Koechner chats it up with celebs inside a Denny’s. First up to bat is the fetching actress Jessica Biel, who receives a rather disappointing gift from our host, talks about her climb up Mount Kilimanjaro (which was par of the HP “Summit on the Summit” campaign) and a hypothetical situation surrounding it. It’s dry and may evoke a chuckle or two, just like last season. Upcoming guests this time around include Maya Rudolph and Christina Applegate.

Amy Poehler Latest to Take Seat at Denny’s

Parks and Recreation star/SNL alum Amy Poehler is the latest funny person to engage “Always Open” host David Koechner and somehow eat Denny’s food in the process. Considering who’s already starred in this Gotham//DumbDumb-created show, we can probably expect to see David Cross, Michael Cera or Will Ferrell to drop by shortly. Here, Koechner continues his creepy shtick and gets too forward with Poehler, whom he refers to more than once as his “little sister.” Wonder why he never tried this with Jason Bateman.

Koechner Poses a Hypothetical to Arnett at Denny’s

Seeing as his DumbDumb partner Jason Bateman already made his appearance and yapped it up with David Koechner in the Denny’s “Always Open” debut, it was only a matter of time that Will Arnett would grace the booth, scarf down diner food and do the funny. Here, the Arrested Development alum, who also does VO work for GMC dont’cha know, plays psychotherapist of sorts and shows his own form of forgiveness. It sure did feel unscripted at the beginning, though, but nonetheless, here’s the latest from DumbDumb, Electus and Gotham. Credits after the jump..

Unicorn Recounts Odd Relationship w/Help from Aerosmith

No wonder David Koechner had no shot with Sarah Silverman at Denny’s. The comedienne was in the midst of a tumultuous, on-again, off-again relationship with Juicy Fruit’s singing mascot, the Serenading Unicorn. Well, that’s the ludicrous premise of what we’ve been told is the final video from EVB’s latest campaign for the Wrigley brand. We’ve covered this since the clips were first rolled out, so why the hell not finish things up. Here’s a music video in which the Unicorn recalls the ups and downs of his love affair with Silverman while crooning to the tune of Aerosmith’s “Angel.” We think “Cryin’” would’ve been just as appropriate, though. Now, you can rest easy folks, the unicorn frenzy appears to have come to an end…for now.

Sarah Silverman Takes a Seat at Denny’s

Man, that David Koechner is so hot right now. As promised in our previous post regarding the launch of Denny’s “Always Open” web series, Sarah Silverman joins up with the aforementioned Anchorman star for a sit-down at the diner chain for a few minutes. One of the comedienne’s opening lines, complete with the porn music, kicks things off proper: “I do like it when people see me in a sexual way.” This “Always Open” installment, though, feels less “unscripted” and more improvisational as Koechner hits on Silverman throughout while she eats some toast and what looks like oatmeal. It’s like the awkward blind date you always wish you had. Credits after the jump…

Juicy Fruit’s Serenading Unicorn Takes on Coolio

Back in the mid-1990s, a feud erupted between then megastar rapper Coolio and famous parodist “Weird Al” Yankovic. You see, Coolio had just taken home a Grammy (this actually happened) for his major contribution to the Dangerous Minds soundtrack, the smash hit “Gangta’s Paradise.” Meanwhile, “Weird Al” was profiting off of one his biggest hits ever, an apparently unlicensed Coolio parody, “Amish Paradise.” Not only that, but Coolio told Grammy reporters that the content of “Gangsta’s Paradise” wasn’t a laughing matter.

Today, things are a little different, and Coolio is no longer rich or very famous. In fact, David Koechner aka The Office’s Todd Packer (who makes a cameo in this video and is also pulling double-duty for Denny’s) might be more recognized by people under drinking age than Coolio. And so, the circle of life continues to turn. At least this time around, Juicy Fruit and EVB’s ongoing singing puppet saga, the serenading unicorn, is keeping Coolio’s original lyrics intact, giving another generation of gum-chewers everywhere another look into the violent underworld of inner-city living. “You and your homies might be lined in chalk” indeed.

Denny’s: The Venue of Choice for Your Favorite Funny People

David Koechner, aka Champ Kind from Anchorman, plays host in a new web series for Denny’s concocted by Gotham in partnership with Will Arnett and Jason Bateman‘s DumbDumb studio as well as Ben Silverman‘s Electus.  The idea: Round up a group of comedians, comedic actors and the like for a quick, unscripted conversation at one of the diner chain’s actual locations. The new “Always Open” talk show, which is basically an extension of Gotham’s “America’s diner is always open” campaign, will feature the likes of Sarah Silverman, Amy Poehler and Will Forte in the coming weeks.

The first clip above features Koechner and Arrested Development star Bateman yapping it up, bringing some dry humor and pretending to enjoy their meals. At the very least, it’s a decent branding attempt by the Gotham camp, which took over the Denny’s account last August.
